V40 1.9D Cambelt Failure S40-V40 1999

Hi,

My wife's car suffered a cam belt failure a few days ago & was towed to the local main dealer, where it's been serviced for the last 5 years.

Cam belt changed at 50K service and now has 61K on the clock.

Dealer yet to fully inspect, but they suspect that belt failed due to "oil pump seizing!" Is this possible? Does oil pump run off cam belt? Anything else likely?

Dealer didn't know if there was possibility of interference damage of valves & pistons, etc., which seems a bit strange!

Can anyone advise, please, if there will likely be damage to valves/pistons/cylinder head & what the likely cost would be?

Thanks

    Thanks Neil,

Will talk to the dealership tomorrow when I get the news of how bad the damage is. Will also try to find out what the cause was, but as you say, if there are several things damaged, then what went first.

A friend also mentioned the tensioner and the fact that they should replace it all, but not sure what is in the service plan. Will try to check this out and go from there.

    Cheers

    Paul

When doing a CAM belt service they only check the tentioner but usually do not replace it, yet the tentioner is just as important as the belt. When my 1998 S40 (petrol) had the belt replaced at 120 000 km the tentioner just fell apart, was just in time before a catastrophic failure. When I take a car for a CAM belt I always insist they replace the tentioner as well, just in case.

I am 99% sure the oil pump also runs off the timing belt, but not sure that a seized oil pump will cause the belt to snap. Also do not think it is so easy for the pump to seize.

Unfortunately there is now damage to a few things and you do not know which went first. All the best.
