Bevel Gear XC90 2006

I just talked to the service rep and my bevel gear needs to be replaced. I have 69,000 miles and do no off road driving. This seems extreme to me. I have a call in to the Regional Mgr. to see about some discount from the $2470. Quote. Any suggestions?

Bevel Gear XC90 2006

Hi,
I can`t really offer any suggestions but apparently the bevel gear on the post 02 vehicles can be problematic.
My wife bought an 04 XC70 in the summer with 42k on it. Last month the bevel gear was replaced at 60K under warranty(Thank God!!)or it would have been a $2800. "hit". WE bought the car at the dealership & it checked out 100% with the pre-purchase inspection(supposedly).
Good Luck!
Rich

Strange that the new awd system failed. You didn't drive around on a donut spare for 100 miles?
What were the symptoms? You are only the second person to memtion a failed bevel gear in the newer cars.
Too bad Volvo won't fix it. All it is is a gear that slips from its pressed fitting. It can be pressed back into place. No new parts needed, just a qualified mechanic.

Rancher Rick was one of the unfortunates I already included. He bought it used, so it was not his fault either.

The brand new XCs have a tire pressure monitoring system, I wonder if that will help. I had thought that it would be a good idea to install one on my V70 the next time I need new tires, if there is any extra money in my meager bank account.

You sure about that?

I seem to remember being in the indie shop a few months ago and seeing a V70 bevel gear assembly on the bench. It was a unit, encased in an aluminum housing, about the size of a M41 overdrive, seemed to be sold only as a rebuilt assembly, and was more than a grand wholesale.

I saw the ticket on this particular job and it was one of the reasons I went to FWD Vs AWD when looking for a newer car.

Great write up over on Volvospeed or Matthews, forgot which, by a Scott. He had a lift installed in his garage and he and his mechanic took apart the bevel gear box. Scott said it looked quite simple inside, expecially the gear that had slid down the shaft!
He also "fixed" his vibrating driveshaft with just a few pieces around his garage and some CV grease.

I wish I could get all 4 wheels off the ground with mine :)

What was the symptom and their explanation? May be worth getting another opinion here. The cred of dealer service writers is not high on this board.

Also if worse came to worst, I understood some people turned their awd cars into 2wd. Could that be possible on the xc90?

I have no advice for you; I just wanted to make a comment. I have seen various warnings considering early AWD, and bevel gear and driveshaft problems. To hear that years later they are failing with no hard service is a bit frightening. Hopefully for the community, but this doesn't help you, this is an isolated failure.

Of course, I just spent a few hours researching the '99-02 ETM fiasco, and how that went on for years. Yuck.

I wish you luck with this, and I hope someone can give you some useful advice.
