S70 Tires S70

Time for new tires for our little S70. Costco says we need High Performance tires 195.60.15 88V ... to the tune of $160 per tire. Another oufit said we could use the "H" series for just over a hundred a pop. We are not high performance people -- just regular folks who love Volvos. Please Advise

I've driven S70s since 1997 (now a 2000 S70/GLT/SE) and, like you are not a 'performance' driver. After 40+ years with Goodyear, I know what tires should be and how they will perform.

I have used Dunlop S or T tires since 1997 with no problems whatever. The reason I use tires with such speed and load rating is that I never reach those speeds nor loads. The main reason I use them is to compensate for the 'rides like an empty dump truck' suspension of my S70. I recommend any suitable tires in this class.

I am using the following, I was looking for grip and safety and not high speed performance:

    Winter: Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50, 185/65R15.

These are soft, quiet tires that work really great in snow and ice.

    Spring/Summer/Fall: BF Goodrich Traction T/A, 195/60R15.

Slightly harder ride than the Blizzaks but good wet weather traction.

Quite satisfied with both sets of tires.

Concur with Klaus' comment. I've personally used Tirerack.com for my 2000 C70. They drop shipped them direct to my local indy Volvo mech here in PA, who installed them. When I picked up my car he told me that in all my years of balancing tires...he has never had a set balance as nicely as these have.

Costco is following the rules. Volvo identifies the proper tire size and speed rating. Our Volvo's have higher speed rated tires than most domestic cars. I have always attributed this to it being a european car and what they qualify it for over there, but that is my opinion.

If you go to tirerack and enter your s70 model, it will follow the same model and eliminate a number of tire options based on speed rating designated by Volvo.

Legally they could be liable if they sold you a tire below the manuf rating and you have an accident. I got he lower speed rated tires because they are cheaper and I never go over 75MPH.

I have Pirelli P3000's. I'm not a performance driver either. I bought mine from Discount Tire. I bought due to 85,000 mile warranty on them.

Not sure where you live, but 160.00 per tire is way too high. I've been happy with them. I live in Chicago and they've been fine during the winter and nice in summer too. All around good tire.

There website it www.tires.com You can read consumer reviews too. I don't work for them, and have posted from time to time here over the past couple of years. Let us know what your final choice is.

I wonder if COSTCO is just full of it, or perhaps their lawyers? No one in the USA is legally allowed to cruise at more than 80mph. Because European cars can easily go over 130mph doesn't mean that we can cruise at 130mph.
Go to tirerack.com and see what they reccomend for an all season tire. Around here there is an outfit called Discount Tire which is reasonable. Tirerack will also list places that mount them for you.
