cabin air filters S70 1998

I have a box in front of the coolant reservoir connected to radiator and 2" hose thru firewall( pollen filter?). I ordered a cabin filter from fcpgroton, and it's too large for this box. Is there also a filter under the passenger knee bolster?

Thanks professors,
I removed the plastic below the windshield in the engine compartment per your suggestion (and the instructions in the filter box where I should have looked first DUUHH) The sticker stated last changed 2003 and YUUCHY it was. The new Mann CU2650 filter wasn't in a plastic frame as original, although it fits snug in the cars filter frame.
The box in front of the coolant reservoir does indeed contain 2 control modules.
The maintenance/service record manual specifies changing cabin filter 10K and the "Air Filter includes control module box filter" 30K. Is this something separate from the standard intake filter located behind driver headlight? Is filtered air from the intercooler drawn thru thru the control module box or is cabin air blown in?

There is no filter for the control unit box. There was one in the 92-93 850 cars but it was discontinued. The airflow for the ecu box is unfiltered, has nothing to do with the intercooler or radiator.

cabin air filters - just below windshield on right side S70 1998

The cabin air filter for S70, V70, and C70 is under a plastic cover that runs across the engine compartment just below the windshield. The filter is on the right side, so you only need to remove a few Torx screws to lift up the cover. When you pull the old filter out, you will probably find a lot of crud and gunk beneath the plastic filter box. Use some rags and a cleaner like 409 to scrub as thoroughly as possible. Then, before you install the new filter, spray Lysol or Wurth air conditioner spray down the supply tube to kill mildew. Have the fan running at top speed to suck the Lysol through the system. Install the new filter, bolt the cover, and you are done.

The box that you are describing is the control unit box, no filters in there.

Filter - we're thinking of different places S70 1998

Maybe we are referring to different places on the car. The filter on my 1999 V70 is under a plastic cover outside (in from of) the windshield. The cover runs across the car from left to right and the wiper shafts project out of the cover further inboard. A friend's 1998 S70 has the filter there, too. Not on your car?

Original poster thought the ECU box was the cabin filter.
