'coolant low' message S80 1999

Brickboader help required

The message center on the dash panel intermittently displays a message "coolant low - stop engine"

This message comes on intermittently, level in coolant reservoir tank is OK - temp gauge pointer dead center where it should be.

Could this be due to a defective level sensor, defective thermostat or whatever else may cause this intermittant message to come and go.

Would appreciate advice.

Thanks, in advance

Mort

For some reason, that seems to be a common problem in the S80. And it is the level sensor that needs to be replaced. First check the electrical connection under the water bottle and clean it.

      Thanks, Klaus,

I eventually put together a hand pressure pump. At about 7psi a slit in the main hose from the top of the radiator opened up and coolant weeped out. Replaced hose.

As an extra precaution, based on your advice, I cleaned the electrical contacts under the reservoir.

      So far, coolant level holding

Nice catch Mort. When you flush the coolant, it would be a good time to replace the lower hose as well.
