Air Filter Change V70-XC70 2004

Gang -

About time for the 37.5K service on my 2004 V70 (2.5T). It's the first service that I'm going to have to pay for and they quoted me $298 which includes: oil change, brake fluid change, balance & rotate tires and air cleaner change. This seems a little steep but what do I know?

I don't know how all that breaks down and I plan to call to see how much the brake fluid change portion would be a la carte. I'm guessing the oil change will be about $40.

Since the weather was about 40* here in New England today I rotated the tires myself. Then I tackled the air filter. What ever happened to the good old days when you just undid a wing nut and dropped in a new one?

I undid the 3 clips at the front of the air box, undid the electrical connection and loosened the big worm clamp that holds the big corrugated air hose to the box. When I went to take the cover off it only raised about 2" before meeting considerable resistance. There are three "hinges" in the rear but the unit didn't want to pivot very much. I might have been able to get the filter out through this 2" opening but I wiggled and pried and the entire top piece finally came off.

Easy, eh? Not so fast! Getting this cover back on was very difficult. These 3 "hinges are not very user friendly. The 'hinges' are rectangular openings in the top rear portion of the bottom part of the air box and 3 'protrusions' on the rear of the top piece. None of these protrusions is the same! The 2 outboard ones seem more like positioners. The center one has some little 'cups' that appear to be designed to fit into a couple of tabs that are part of the rectangular opening. [This stuff is hard to describe.]

The center one was very tough to engage. After a lot of time I managed to get it to engage by pressing down and back (very forcefully) on the center rear portion of the top and it finally popped in.

[Is there a question here?]

In the future should I bother to remove the entire top or should I just try to do it through the small opening in the front?

If I should pull the top off are there any tips to getting it back on more easily?

    They pay engineers too much. Keeping things simple is just not in their lexicon. The "older" versions have 6 or 7 clamps/clips that hold down the lid, which means dirty fingers to change the filter.
    Because there is just enough room to swap filters with the forward clips loosened, I would just pry it up and not attemp to take the whole thing off. Just too much work!
    An oil change for synthetic is at least $80. Volvo synthetic oil is very expensive, it costs a lot to remove the refinery label and stick a Volvo label on the bottle :)
    Same is true for brake fluid. If you don't want to bleed the brake system yourself, find a local reputable shop and ask for a quote. That is why Volvo indies get so much business.
    Oh, don't forget your cabin filter.

      Thanks for your responses. I knew if I waited a few weeks that someone would step up.

      Yes, I have to remember about that cabin filter. And next time I tackle that air filter I'll just try to pull it out the front. I had some anxious moments trying to get those rear 'tabs' lined up.

      There are no doubt lots of things that the Volvo 'indies' can no longer do given all the electronics required but it's nice there are a few things that the factory hasn't made impossible for owners and independents.

        I fought with my air filter, too! Used a Mann replacement that could have fit a little better. My guess is that the engineers never had to replace one, just get it into the car when it was built and they were done. Hmm, I've got to think that they are smarter than that, what are we missing?

        Also, I recommend using the oem brake fluid which can be bought here:

        Use the dotblue or the dotamber. They are the same thing, different colors. Why you ask? Use a different color than what is in there and you can easily see when it is thoroughly changed over. Also, at least when the blue is used, you know that you have the dot4+ stuff. It is compatible with dot3 and dot4, but has a slightly higher boiling point and somewhere on the web there is info showing that its water absorption over time is lower.

        fcpgroton is a good supplier, get yourself some oil filters, a cabin filter and brake parts at the same time and the shipping becomes insignificant.

    OK, maybe the question was too easy for this board - or too long?

    When changing the air filter on a 2001-2006 V70 do you take the entire top off the air box or just open it as far as it will go?

    If you do take the entire top off any tips on getting it back on?
