intermittant heater fan operation 850 1995

the heater fan for my '95 850 with automatic climate control works intermittently. no absolute patterns have been detected but it seems to not work when it gets lower than 25 degrees F. and sometimes it starts when restarting the car after it is warm from driving even in the cold weather. is it the fan or is it the thermostat in the vent controlling the fan? or is it something else?

During startup, does the fan start and then turn off? The ECC unit is smart enough that it will not turn the fan on until the coolant temp starts to rise. Of course, if you move the fan speed switch, that overrides the ECC and makes the fan run.
There should be codes in your B-1 slot. Check them and post back. Milage has nothing to do with a heater fan. Just dirt in the intake will make a difference. You should install a cabin filter if the car doesn't already have one.

You can easily remove the cover under the glove compartment and try tapping on the motor. The brushes tend to loose contact with the armature when they get worn because the wire gets tight and prevents them from moving in the holder. This may be agrevated by the cold weather. It's quite a hassle getting the motor out but it does come apart easily. The brush wire can then be unsoldered and slipped a little allowing the brushes more movement. Otherwise you'll need a new motor.

this fix sound interesting should the brushes be worn out at 130,000 miles?

BYW the fan's not very hard to take apart. Just pry off the connector adapter and remove the one screw on the end of the housing. The fan just pulls out.

Well, this, of course, all depends on how much you use the fan. Our '95 is my menopausal wife's car and the ac is on at least 3/4 fan speed ALL THE TIME. Our fan wore out at exactly the same mileage give or take 5K. The brushes aren't really worn out so much as the wire is too short to allow them to use up all of the available holder travel. You kind of wonder if stuff like this is intentional or just due to lack of foresight??

when its working, does the fan blower make strange noises - rattles, grinding noises, squeals, or squeaks? Are these noises only present during turns?
Is so you probably need a new blower. This is what happened to me.

when the fan is working it sounds normal; no rattling, squeeling or grinding. i'm thinking it is the "brushes" post, i am going to investigate this idea. thanks for your response.

I had a similar problem in my 98 s70. I proceeded to take the motor out and when I had it in my hand it worked. So I carefully put it back in place and now it works. Since then it started working intermittently again and since I had not put my glove box back in I could reach in and jiggle the wire harness. When I did this I noticed a short where the ground wire is attached to the body of the car (on the s70 this is by the right front tire.

I would suggest taking the glove box out and moving the wires around to see what you find.
