Transmission fluid and antifreeze question V70-XC70 2002

I'm new here, my wife has a 2001 S60 that we bought new, 75K on it now and I just bought a 2002 V70 Wagon, 79K.
Anybody know what type tranny fluid these cars take? Not really interested in getting it from Volvo. The local dealer over charges on almost everything.
Also the book says that the antifreeze is lifetime. This can't be correct, never heard of any car fluid that lasted forever.

Thanks in advance.

Transmission fluid and antifreeze question V70-XC70 2002

    Hi guys,

Really interesting comments her on this issue...

I just got this neglected V70 - engine oil thick like black treakle, ATF not much better and smelling very burnt.

So I did a flush and refill with Comma ATF which I had also used on my 240 and 850. The V70 seems fine and pulls very well...

    BUT ______!!!!!!XXXXX

Now I've read your comments I am wondering if I may be doing the tranny HARM...

Should I bite the bullet, go to my local Volvo Rip Off Merchant and buy the rite stuff?

By the way, the Volvo AntiFreeze I bought was reasonably priced and does seem better than the Shell stuff I used in my old 240. That at least was a worthwhile purchase.

    Opinions and comments welcomed...

    Cheers

    Andy

On the coolant, brake fluid etc. every 2 years. re: trans, only Volvo or Mobil 3309. Toyota has the same fluid, as the tranny is made in Japan..

Transmission fluid and antifreeze question - no such thing as "lifetime' fluids V70-XC70 2002

Definitely change the antifreeze every few years. In a 1999 V70, I change it on a 2-year cycle, but maybe that is a bit too often. My 1981 BMW recommended bi-annual (every two years) coolant change, which I have followed that all these years. Careful maintenance must work because the heater core is original and the radiator is only the second one (and it's 15 years old.)

My recomendation: If in doubt, buy the chemicals from the Volvo dealer. They might cost a bit more, but so what? You'll know they are the right juices.

Transmission fluid and antifreeze question - no such thing as "lifetime' fluids V70-XC70 2002

BMW had a problem with corroding cylinder head due to their coolant, thats wy BMW maintainence schedule recomends to change liquid ewery two years.
Volvo has not and never had that problem.
i have owned and worked with volvo all my life mostly RWD:s but most recently V70 2,5T -98, i have also worked at the dealership in my town as a mechanic and there has never been a problem with the coolant.
Do you have to change the fluid: NO
Is it harmful to do so: NO

The maintainence schedule orders to check level and top of when nessesary.

Any ATF oil with one of these specs. will do, General Motors: DEXRON III, Ford: MERCON V, SPIII fluids, JWS 3309.

JWS 3309 is the name used by Volvo.

I just assumed that we are talking about automatic transmission, you didn`t specify wich.

If your cooling liquid is mixed with volvos antifreeze with corrosion protection you won`t have to change that, only check level and top of when needed.

"Any ATF oil with one of these specs. will do, General Motors: DEXRON III, Ford: MERCON V, SPIII fluids, JWS 3309. JWS 3309 is the name used by Volvo."

This is incorrect. The automatic transmission is, indeed, Japanese, it is an Aisin-Warner AW55-50SN. The ATF specification, created by Aisin Warner, is JWS 3309--and is the spec used by Volvo, but, strictly speaking, not the name.

More importantly, it cannot be replaced by Dexron III, Mercon V, etc, although it is backwards compatible with those fluids, i.e. you can use Mercon V in most (all?) late model Fords except for those that have the AW55-50 (some Freestyles and 500's). JWS 3309 ATF's have a very different friction modifier and stabilization package. It was designed for very long change intervals--but, you may want to change it more frequently.

Toyota Type IV is JWS 3309 as is Mobil 3309. GM, Saab, Ford, and Mazda all sell a JWS 3309 ATF. It is usually called High Performance ATF, I've found Ford's version at a local distributor for about $3 qt. Mazda, Saab and GM were about $5-6 and we all know the ridiculous price of Volvo's fluid.

All that said, your best bet is Mobil 3309, that is what is in all the bottles in north America, if not further--yes, Mobil is making and distributing and or repackaging it. It should be available from from your local Mobil lube dealer for about $4-5/qt, many have bought it over the web from here: http://avlube.com/mobilatf3309.html. Prices may be higher than what I paid as that was 6 months ago...

Volvo's coolant is a long life mixture, 5yr/100,000ish.

Claes, thanks for the info, yes they are both automatics.
Can you (or anyone else) recommend a good manual for the maintenance and repair of these cars?

      Regards,
      Jim L.

A program called vadis that is volvos service program is out there on torrentsites, the version that is out there is the old one but still covers 1974 - 2003 modells volvo. (not shure on the end year might be 2005)
In this program you will find warranty fix bulletins and maintainence shedule.
also complete instruktions with fotografs on for example change of timing belt.
