Engine noise has me alarmed 850 1997

'97 850 (not turbo) with 189K.

Today I turned my car on and heard a high-pitched screaming coming directly from the engine block. I can faintly detect a real fast clicking within the screaming. The screaming is at ear-splitting volume with the hood up. I thought maybe the engine was out of oil so I added a whole quart (lately I have been going through oil at a quicker rate) even though it's only been 3K miles since my last oil change.

After adding the oil, I ran the car for about a minute but didn't get an oil reading on the dipstick. Is that because the car needs to be running for a few minutes to get an oil reading, or is it because my engine is bone dry?

If the noise is related to my engine being without oil, how serious is the noise and what do I do now? Have I destroyed my engine by idling it for two minutes today with all the noise? If the noise is not related to low oil, what could it be?

I replaced the timing belt and serpentine belt on schedule.

Any advice? I'm desperate and worried about this car, which I have owned for six years.

    Copeland,

I hope you are joking with us, because this was very funny.

How does someone not know that if the dipstick is bone dry, that that is a very bad thing?

I have personally never heard a main bearing squeeling like that, but I'l take Klaus' word for it. A failure in a main bearing is usually like a stroke, or a heart attack--the first symptom is death.

How did you not know that you had run out of oil. There is a warning light on the dash that would have come on in response to a lack of oil pressure. It's not one of the regular lights, it's a special light just for this issue. You would have likely seen it flashing-on when you made stops, or turned corners. Eventually, it would have remained on continuously, but once you reach that point the life of your engine is counted in hours, or even minutes.

Fill the thing with oil to the top of the oil range. If you are lucky, the car will start. If you are even luckier, the car will run for another hour. If you have been blessed by some divine authority, your car may even run long enough to drive it (rather than tow it) to the shop to have the engine replaced.

If your in the Chicago area, I have an extra 850, non-turbo engine sitting in my garage.

If there is no oil on the dipstick, your engine is without oil. With the engine off, it only take a minute or so for the oil to make its way to the sump.

Check the oil level, make sure the car is on level ground. If there is no oil on the dipstick, add another can. Check it again. And continue until oil is at the correct level.

If the engine was without oil, the screeming you heard was the bearings on the crankshaft. One of them was dying.

The oil has to be going somewhere. If it is not leaking out of the engine, there should be a large cloud of smoke behind your car. Investigate.

I know what the oil pressure warning light looks like on the dash board. It has never lit up in all the years I have driven this car. Also, I check the oil level all the time, but this was the first time that I received no reading whatsoever on the dipstick. I thought that might have been because the car was cold, now I know better.

There is no oil leak beneath the car, but as I said earlier, there is some oil seepage out the top of the engine block. It is pooling there after the car has been driven for several miles.

I am going to top the engine with oil, crank, and take it from there.

Thanks to everyone for all the advice.

I agree with Klaus, but one thing I notice is that your post suggests that you are checking the oil with teh engine running? It MUST be off, and allow a couple of minutes for the oil to return to the sump so you can measure it. Don't over-fill it either, or the crankshaft will cause the oil to foam, and then it's almost as bad as having no oil!

IF you determine your oil level is OK, you may have a seized alternator, air conditioning compressor, water pump, or belt tensioner pulley. It could be a seized timing belt tensioner too, but if it is, the belt will break very quickly and ruin the engine.

      Good luck!
