keyless remote programming advice V70-XC70 2003

I just bought my 2003 V70 from a small used-car dealer and the keyless FOB is broken (he thought the battery was just broken). I have replaced the battery and it still doesn't work. I can actually see a little broken piece inside.

I am thinking about buying a new one online for WAY cheaper than the dealer. Can anyone give advice on programming it myself? Is this possible? Or do you recommend just having the dealer do it for $80 (ouch)?

Thanks a lot.

Jeremy

Depending on what is broken... If the resistor board is intact and the broken plastic is part of the case, get a replacement from Ebay. Then swap cases.

What gets stored in the car is the frequency from the remote + a code. So long as the guts are the same, it should still work with your car.

A dealer will charge for the remote + an hour of labor!!!

Sorry, that can only be done by a dealer. Not the news we like. Check with a dealer and see what the remote plus programming costs.

I faced the same situation with my 2001 V70. You need to buy it from a dealer, do not waste money on other places.

The only way you can save a bit (maybe) if you buy a remote from a mail-order Volvo parts dealer, and have it programmed by your local dealer.

A new remote comes with a special code/barcode tag, that your dealer will program into your car's computer. Without this label you can't do anything with the remote. All remotes you see on ebay or used car dealers have no code, so they can only be used for some parts (case, etc)
