engine removal w/o trans 850 1995

I am planning an engine swap.
I am removing the bad engine from my "95" 850 NA and installing an engine from a "98"
I have the complete 98 parts car and it has been suggested to me to drop the entire drive train out from under each car and swap them as a whole unit.
It seems to me that it would be a lot less work to just swap out the motors and leave the trans in the car.
Haynes manual describes pulling motor with transmission attached from the top.
Is it any real problem just pulling motor only?
Is there plenty of clearance?
I will be using a "cherry picker"style crane.
Once again ,thanks for any advise.

Well, you could just swap the engine, but removing the tranny is a pain too.

The 1998 is a much better tranny than the 1995, unless you have a manual tranny. I suggest swapping as much as you can.

    The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are a 95 854T and a 98 V70R :)
