A/C cuts out, restart fixes it S70

This has happened to me once or twice in the past few years, but about 4 times this weekend (over 80 degrees out of course... may be related). The A/C works fine in cool weather, but sometimes in very hot weather, it runs good when the car is started, then it starts getting *really* cold - icy cold - then suddenly stops working and warm humid air blows out the vents. Turning the car or the A/C switch off for a few minutes and re-starting fixes the problem and we have cold air again.

This weekend we went on a road trip in 80+ degree weather and this was very annoying.

I suspect it is a sensor problem, since the A/C itself is certainly blowing cold air almost all the time.

Any hints on where I might have a problem?

Thanks and have a great weekend :)

Tina, sounds like a bad expansion valve. Which you don't want to replace unless you have an SM streak :) It is next to the evaporator, behind the dash.

I would just live with it, so long as you can turn off the AC for 5 min and then turn it back on again. An AC shop can verify this.

If the AC dryer/accumulator is very cold, that might also be an easier problem.

My S70 (which my 19 yr old daughter totaled last weekend) had a similar problem. The windings in the clutch at the compressor had a problem. I was getting 12V to the compressor but it was not turning as the clutch would not engage. My indie mechanic said the clutch and compressor were made as one and would have to be replaced as a unit.

      Hope that helps.

Sorry, but that is not true. The clutch is replaceable. But using plastic bread closure tabs makes for very cheap and easy clutch shims :)

How would I shim the clutch if that turns out to be the case?

Excellent, thanks!! I'll do the test this weekend and go find some bread ties if I can. Of course bread comes in paper bags where I am from, where can I find those plastic things?

Sorry, Tina, I just couldn't resist.

Ask a couple of co-workers to get you a total of 4 plastic tabs. An extra one for just in case.
