Knock Sensor Check Engine Light 850 1995

I have been reading a lot of posts on this knock sensor problem. But so far I have not found anything concrete here on the problem. My car has been in the Volvo dealer's garage all week and they have not been able to correct it. They have replaced the sensor twice and also the whole wiring harness. I saw a post here that described dirty contacts on the ECU. So I called them and they have done that too and the problem still persists. They are going to have to wait until Monday now, to get in touch with someone back east on the problem.

When and if they figure it out, I will get back on here and let you know what they figured out that it was.

I said I would be back here and report what the Volvo mechanic found with this pesky knock sensor problem. Turns out that it was a bad wiring harness to the knock sensor. But what caused the mechanic to chase his tall around the garage was when he replaced the harness, he wired it wrong. So the knock sensor light still came on. He ended up talking to someone at Volvo HQ and and they told him he had a bad wiring harness. When he told them he had already replaced it, they told him he must have it wired wrong. Yep! That was it. I now have a car wihout the check engine light on.

Thanks for all of the tips given here. This is a great board...

Have you replaced the fuel filter recently? I was getting the code all the time until I replaced the fuel filter...gas was not flowing correctly so it would make the engine knock a little and set off the sensor.

I'll ask the mechanic Monday. The car is still in the Volvo dealer garage. I keep the service up-to-date on the car, so I will ask if the filter has been replaced. Thanks for the reply...

If you do a lot of low speed driving, you may just have some carbon buildup. Cleaning out the combustion chambers may help.

If the techs replaced the knock sensors and did not position them correctly, they will not work properly.

      Klaus,

Carbon build up could be a problem, since I drive it around town a lot. This seems to be a pesky problem. Thanks again for the email and the .PDF file you put together on replacing the knock sensor. Great job on it!
