850 t5 crapped out while rolling down the road 850 1997

It acted like a fuel supply issue. Started sputtering then died. Let it set for a little while and it started for a couple of seconds then died again. Fuel filter?
I can't imagine having fuel pressure enough to start after a while if it were a pump/relay . I didn't pull the rotor cap off to see if it's a moisture issue yet.
Any thoughts would be great
Thanks
Jim

Got my fuel pump from FCP Groton. It was the cheap one , 89.00. It was a nice surprise, it's a walbro pump. I have a lot of experience with walbro pumps, I used to run durability and environmental tests with walbro products and they always did pretty well.
Got it in and the car fired right up.
    Thanks dudes for the support

    ah correction!
i went and got a new relay, nothin... I then got my extra long leads for my dvm so I could see the meter when I turned the key. Is it normal for the pump to only see 12v for a few seconds after the key is turned on? then after the car starts and fuel pressure drops the pumps sees 12v? Hence, it's charging the rail for startup? Well both relays performed the same with no response from the pump. Sounds like a fuel pump. Am I totally out to lunch?
    Thanks again

      Hi Jim.

On my car there is a timed pulse of 12v when you turn ign. ON. Just a second or so. Its even like that without any fuel in the tank! Makes it a bit tricky priming through if you expect fuel to simply flow and build up pressure then stop. WHen the engine starts fuel pump runs.It may also run when the starter is cranked; but I cant hear that well now so I cant confirm that bit.
You should 'HEAR' the pump briefly when you turn on.

      Best of luck.......

        Thanks Howard,
Def. no action from the pump itself. I have one on the way. I couldn't afford the Volvo or the bosch pumps so I got some after market thing from fcp groton hear in the states. I wouldn't think they would put something out there that was total crap, so for a fraction of the cost I gave it a shot.
        Thanks for the insight
        Jim

Jumped the relay and nothing happened. Have very little fuel getting to the rail. I don't here the pump charging. I'm gonna change the filter but whats a quick way to ring out the pump?
Don't have a pressure that will fit this fitting yet.
    Thanks

Check for battery voltage at the pump (Pink wire and Black wire). If you have voltage there then the pump is bad. Sometimes you can get it to run for a short time again by smacking the bottom of the fuel tank with a ball bat.

        A baseball bat? 850 1997

That sounds a little difficult when rollin down the road :)

Thanks for the 12V check at the pump. But the turkey never said if the pump ran with 12V!!!

Sometimes, I think I should just retire from this and other sites. It does get a little frustrating...

          >>That sounds a little difficult when rollin down the road :)<<

For sure. It only works when the car is at a stop - sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't and it doesn't work very many times. It got me home for a few miles in my Suburban one time. The last time the pump crapped out in the Sub it didn't work at all to bang on it and I had to have it towed to the dealer.

I was going to change it out in the McDonald's parking lot but my wife wouldn't hear of it. We were on our anniversary weekend at the cabin and she - fortunately - was driving down separately in the Volvo and came back to get me.

My wife gets a little irritated with things that you need to crawl under the car and bang. I had an old Chevy Impala with a bad starter that needed a hammer whack about every 10th try to get it to work. She wasn't amused when she had to crawl under the car in a dress with a hammer in her hand to get the car to start and get home from work.

Her office mates did cheer though when it started.

            Starters are fun 850 1997

My 1973 Beetle had the starter solenoid go on it, so I used a long handled screwdriver to engage the starter. I finally got smart and wired a push button under the dash. No more wet pants when it was raining, it was just like these new fangled cars with the start button. Ahhh, progress.

I checked the voltage with the relay in and it was .000vdc, put the jumper in and viola 12v. Off to get a relay and possibly a spare for the emergency kit.
        Thanks

    Hello Jimmy.

Just a thought Jim, The other week I had my V70 die on the road, died in exactly the same way as you describe with brief restarts and apparently the sound of the fuel pump priming.

In fact I had run out of fuel, with a faulty fuel gauge still showing 5 galls! I could easily have been 'kidded' had I not had the same thing before on other cars.

I put in two galls then had to switch ign on and of a few times along with quite a few attempted starts before she 'caught' and ran normaly.

With obscure faults;never dismiss the obvious.

    Very best regards.
    Howard. Isle of Skye.

A good possibility it is just the fuel pump relay. Read this thread:

Jumper pins 15 and 87 on the relay and see what happens. Every spring and every fall the relays crap out. The capacitors go bad and they are temperature sensitive.

The relay trips and the fuel pump primes. I also have spark from the coil. This car is new to me so I have no history. I'll try the jumpers
