'01 S60 2.4T alternator S60 2001

Group:
The alternator in my '01 S60 2.4T just quit and the local very competent indie shop got another one. However they sent the wrong one. He says mine had a "clutch" sort of thing on the pulley end ands the replacement did not. I have not seen either one.

Question is what is that "clutch" and what is it for?

Thanks in advance,

-- S' V'

Ouch. I have never heard of a clutch on an alternator. It always spins on the S belt and is never intended to change speed if the engine rpms go up or down.

Why didn't your mechanic just change the brushes? Unless the bearings in the alternator failed.

Diodes can fail Klaus, and windings can chaff and short.

I agree. But windings and bearings seldom fail. The diode board, which contains the brushes can be replaced much easier than a complete alternator.

But a clutch in the alternator? These new cars are getting to be too much for my wee brain.

          Hi again KLaus.

I belive that the adoption of the AC generator on vehicles was one of the best things that ever happened to motoring mankind, and I hope eventualy that computers on cars will be seen in the same positive way.

Alternators seldom fail, but when they do, we are doomed these days,we wont get far.

I recently saw a 'digger'that touched some overhead power cables with its boom sending a 220v charge to earth through the structure of the machine. The diodes that are only good for fifty volts or so, punctured their junctions easily with this discharge.

The diodes are not in that box by the brush holder, that is the voltage regulater, another source of infrequent failure.

The diodes, usualy nine of them, are located on heat sinks inside the body of the machine and are a bench job to change.

As a poor ignorant Crofter it sometimes falls to me to rebuild them, but I dont do AC pumps!!! He He.

          Best regards as ever...
          Howard.
