engine problem S70

Today I picked up a '98 S70 for a really cheap price. The car was towed in to the local dealer because of an engine noise ( it clacks very loudly ). The mechanics said that the car will need an engine. The oil on the dipstick is showing up only at the very tip of the stick. There's no oil light coming on when the car is running.

What would the noise be? Maybe a wrist pin? I'm trying to get an idea of whether or not this engine is worth fixing. Maybe finding a low mileage used engine would be the best plan. The mileage on the car is 191 K and it is one owner with service records.

The oil light only comes on when there is no oil pressure, not low on oil (I hate that feature).

Could be that someone dropped something into the spark hole and then ran like heck. Broken wrist pins and other like problems are usually the result of a turbo overboost or no oil.

In either case, a new used engine with a new rear main seal and a clean oil separator will go a long way.

Ask the mechanics at the dealer. They must have some idea when they said "it needs an engine."
