Any tips on radiator change-out? 850 1995

Have a '95 855 non-turbo, automatic and a rad with a 2" crack so I've got to replace it. I've removed the rad on my 244 before but the 850 rad is more of a challenge. I've read it has to be dropped out to remove - not up and out. True? Any tips from ones who've done this?

Hi, just done this on my 855 AWD - manual version, the following procedure will probably be pretty much the same for an auto? The whole radiator, fan, A/C condensor and intercooler - if you had one - drops out as a complete assembly. Get A/C de-gassed if you have it. Remove plastic undershield from under / behind front bumper - remove one bolt each side of the shield, lower shield and pull back off front edge. Disconnect A/C pipes - socket head screws each side of lower rad - retain yellow 'O' rings. No turbo on yours so no need to disconnect intercooler hoses! Disconnect oil cooler pipes if you have the oil cooler in radiator, the clips have to be prised open a bit, external circlip pliers work well for this, otherwise use slim nosed pliers in reverse action to prise open the clips and slide them back - be prepared to catch the oil when you release the pipes. Disconnect fan plug. Drain coolant and disconnect top and bottom hoses. Undo radiator mounting bolts from underneath - one either side of radiator - care required here, best if you can wire brush the threaded section of the bolts [but not easy to get to] and get some penetrating oil on them and let it soak for a while, the captive nuts welded to the brackets are a bit fragile and it doesn't take much effort to un-captivate them! Now the whole radiator assembly can be dropped out from the bottom, you may need to slacken or release the small fume blower motor mounts to allow the radiator bracket to drop past - depends on the brackets on the rad. Note that the plastic shroud with the relays above the radiator doesn't need to be removed, it's not actually part of the assembly. Now you can split apart the A/C condenser, Radiator, fan shroud, and intercooler [if you had one], then re-assemble the whole lot with the replacement radiator. Take care not to trap any cables when replacing into the car. It all sounds complicated, but it's a pretty straightforward job if you're a reasonably handy mechanic. Good Luck.

I did my 98 S70 last October. Yes, it must be removed and replaced from underneath. I put the car on ramps and that worked well.

I eventually gave up on connecting the new lower hose. I was trying to reach the connection behind the engine from up top and it was a really tight fit. Later, I realized there was much better access from below. I don't have turbo, though, that could make a difference.

Don't make the dumb error that I did. All the spacers, washers, mount bushings, metal clips for holding screws, etc. didn't come with my Nissens I got from Eeruoparts. I had the new one halfway in when I realized I had to take it back out and move all this hardware from the old rad to the new one. Otherwise - no way to mount it.

I reused the hose couplings and other hardware. Some people also recommned you replace the thermostat at the same time, but it's so easy to get to if that needs to be done later - I left mine alone.

I don't remember where I got my instructions, but I see there are instructions posted on Bay 13 over on Volvospeed.

The rad is a tight fit as I remember and took some fiddling and shifting to get it in place just right.It's not a hard DIY in my opinion, just tedious.
