Caliper Piston Won't Fully Retract S70 1999

Hello All,

I posted this on the V70 board but didn't seem to get a shake, maybe the S-70 board is a little busier.

New pads in the front went well with the right side, but on the left, it appears the caliper piston won't fully retract to enable insertion of the new pads in the limited room.

Should I just use the old inner with about 0.20" and a new outer. I'm afraid of really cranking down with the c clamp on the piston to get it to retract any further. Right now, the piston doesn't leak and it surely did move back. The reservoir cap was off btw.

Or do I need to bite the bullet and purchase a rebuilt caliper and do it right.

Thanks,

Marty Wolfson

I just replaced my left front with the same problem. I normally use channel pliers, but the caliper would not budge. With a C clamp, it finally went home with a whole lot of torque.
I had wondered if removing the brake line from the caliper would be problem. So I got my trusty adjustable wrench and it came loose without much pressure.

With the new caliper and slide pins liberally greased, my brakes work like they are supposed to.

Also a good time to replace the brake fluid.

      Thanks Klaus,

Yesterday, I ordered a rebuilt caliper from Eeuroparts - $40 + return shipping. I didn't have a 14 mm flare so in my travels this morning doing errands, I stopped and picked up one at Sears for $5. I didn't trust an open end 14 on that flared end nut. I think you were lucky!

Looks pretty straightforward. Living in NY, I get my parts from the two Ct outfits in 1 day.

This particular brake job is interesting because the brakes worked flawlessly, but given the obvious problem the piston had, it was only a matter of time. Also of interest is that these pads had 75K on them and the outer (most worn) pad still had about .15" of lining.

You can tell who drives this car the most!

      Best,

      Marty
