You need the fob and the receiver. Check out this thread. http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/1264777/850/adding_keyless_entry_success.html

It is true that they are all prewired. If you have the lock/unlock button on your dash then you have the solenoids in the door and it is a matter of having the receiver and the keyfobs. Most of them had the receiver anyway and the keyfobs got lost along the way. The way to tell is to yank the glove box and look for a black receiver module that is more or less located on the passenger's side A pillar - just behind the front of the glove box. It will say Alps Electronics and it has a green plug in the bottom.

If you have such a module you need to read the fine print on the module to find the part number and FCC identifier so that you can get the correct remote keyfob.

They are prewired. Do a search over on the 240 board, a lot of them have bought remotes cheaply and easily installed. They do not have an alarm function, which can be aftermarketed.
What I am trying to say, aftermarket is much cheaper than OEM parts.

i second what kluas said, and ozark.
i added OEM keyless entry to my 95 wagon. it works fine. but my aftermarket keyless on my last car worked better and cost about equal if you dont count my time to work on the volvo.

i would guess that i would be easy for an aftermarket setup to be installed with all the volvo wires in place...
good luck!
