Tailgate Ajar Light - the cheap easy fix V70-XC70 1999

Having no desire to spend big bucks for a new tailgate latch just to turn off that annoying orange dash light, I decided to pull off the interior tailgate cover and do some nosing around.

Taking off the manual hatch lever assembly lets you see the wires as they enter the latch - just yank the blue wire w/ brown stripe from the connector and out goes the light.

I hope you checked the latch first. With the door open, push the latch to its first close point. Then take a screwdriver and close it to the second and locked point. If the light goes out, then you probably adjusted the door latch bar too tight or something else is amiss. If the light is still on, then the microswitch is at fault.

I hadn't attempted any adj. on either latch or bar, since it was/is functioning perfectly, latching firmly and locking/unlocking both manually and remotely.

Light just came on and stayed - until I got tired of it.

Tailgate Ajar Light - the cheap easy fix V70-XC70 1999

The tailgate ajar light came on in my 99 v70 a few days ago. My wife said she closed a bedsheet in latch, but I didn't think this caused the problem. Then the latch stopped working. It wouldn't latch the tailgate closed. Having read this post, I fiddled with the latching mechanism, moving the latch in and out of its different positions. It was very difficult to move the latch in and out. Finally, I moved it into the open position, but it dragged a coil spring out of the inside of the latch assembly. I removed the coil spring and the latch seems to work properly, but the light is still on. Could the spring operate the switch? Or maybe it works the lock, I haven't tested that yet. Any thoughts? TIA

LOL a bed sheet! Yes, the bed sheet was forced into the latch and caught on the spring. When the sheet was yanked out, the spring was pulled from its holder.
I know where this spring is, having seen it a long time ago, but doubt you will ever get it back in and working properly. The spring helps open the latch and keeps it from rattling.

The spring is trashed. What is the fix? Can I get a new spring? Is there a replacement latch assembly? Is it a difficult install?

So far, it's working properly, but I'm sure my wife is going to call from the road saying that the tailgate won't shut, it keeps bouncing open, it's pouring rain, and her stuff is getting wet. Thanks.

Check around the junk yards for another latch. I don't think you can take a latch apart.
So long as it latches tightly, there shouldn't be a problem with the latch you have. I would have been more concerned had the spring fallen internally somewhere and botching up the latch.
