Battery Replacement and Drain Hose - do I need it? S60 2002

Hi All,

My OEM battery just croaked yesterday (75k miles). I walked down to my local NAPA and got a replacement with better CCA. Anyway, the OEM battery had a hole where one could plug in a drain tube. The NAPA replacement battery doesn't have the hole. What is the impact of not using the drain tube? Never saw one in my domestic or Japanese vehicles before the Volvo.

Thanks.

Not needed unless the battery is in the trunk or other enclosed space. That is only if the battery overflows, the acid will go down the tube and away from any metal parts.

      My daughter's battery (07 S60) *is* in the trunk! ... S60 2002

re: "...Not needed unless the battery is in the trunk or other enclosed space...."

Can't say whether that '02 (of the original poster) has a trunk-mounted battery, but in my daughter's '07 S60 2.5T, it certainly is in there, under the trunk compartment floor and right next to the spare. I can't say if it also has the hose, though -- I just remember glancing at the battery as I was adding tools (torque wrench, better socket, and wheel "pins" to hold the tire in place until the lug bolts are inserted) to her tire-changing kit.

Hope you have good luck with aftermarket battery. Over the years I've found the Volvo battery to be much better that the after market ones.
