An economy car? Great fuel mileage on 1999 V70 V70-XC70 1999

I just delivered the old family V70 to my daughter in Chicago, and it delivered the best fuel economy ever, 34 mpg on the Natchez Trace (53 mph with cruise control) and about 30 mpg on normal interstates (70-80 mph). I'm pleased; this was one of our best car purchases ever.

1999 V70 NA, manual transmission
Stock 15 inch wheels with Bridgestone RE960 with pressure a bit above specified (I reduced the front pressure during the trip)
Castrol Syntec 10W-30 synthetic oil
93-octane gasoline
1 can Jectron FI cleaner
Original ETM

Total car mileage is only 65,000, and it does not use a bit of oil, even with this thinner synthetic. Why buy a Prius when you can have a Volvo for trips....

I have a 1998 V70 T5 with an Upsolute chip. I can easily get 30+ mpg by setting the cruise at 60 mph on the freeway, using regular gas. Nowhere near that mileage on city streets or stop and go traffic though.

Manual trannie and optimal speed = good mileage. What do you get during a 70 MPH trip? When the economics of driving lead some people to slow down on highways I hope everyone remembers to drive smart. Keeping to the right and passing safely will become a bigger part of driving. This is not a rant. It's inevitable. Kira

An economy car? 70 mph achieves about 30 mpg V70-XC70 1999

About 30 mpg at 70 miles/hour. Above that, wind resistance really begins to increase fuel use. I think keeping the tires inflated as high as the sticker specifies also helps.

An economy car? 70 mph achieves about 30 mpg V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 V70 T5, 5 speed geartronic auto, 140k miles and get 28 mpg hiway at @70mph. I increase tires to about 40 psi, and use 10-30 synthetic. Anyone else have input on tire pressure for max mpg?

High tire pressure - how about handling? V70-XC70 2001

40 psi in front? Do you find the steering to get too twitchy? I experimented but found I had to stay at the specified pressure in front. The back can be higher than specified but then I can feel every pothole and expansion joint.
