Bad tranny, PNP switch or maybe speed sensor - Help :) 850 1993

Hopefully someone can help me with my dilemma. I know the 93's have a history of bad trannies, but I'm optimistic the tranny itself is okay.

Here is what is going...

Fluid is fine and has been changed. No visible leaks.

The tranny is fine when cold. Shifts normally.

Once warm, the shifter goes into P,D,R and N just fine. The problem seems to be that the tranny isn't downshifting in traffic. Then I need to rev the engine to get it to move. Once it gets really hot the car will hardly move. So I suspect a bad PNP switch. Feels like it might be stuck in 3rd gear?? Don't know for sure...

This morning I pulled the tranny codes and got a "2-3-2" - Missing Speedometer Signal. That was the only code. No engine codes. Weird since the speedometer is fine. Does this mean the computer isn't getting the speedo signal? That makes me suspect a bad speed sensor.

Can anyone help? Thanks in advance!

On a side note, boy am I glad I still have the 240 as a backup!!

What you describe is usually because of the tranny fluid being too hot. Is the engine fan working???? Someone just posted with a similar problem with his tranny and needed a new fan relay. His fan didn't kick in when the AC was on.

If the speed signal comes back repeatedly, then there may be a problem with the sensor. Usually this happens and can be cleared and ignored.

Unfortunately, the mechanic I use occasionally doesn't do any tranny work other than replacements so he isn't much help diagnosing the problem.

The AC isn't working. It needs a drier. Not much need for it on Cape Cod anyway :)

Good thought, I'll check the fan. I did hear it before all this started. The thermostat also needs to be replaced as it works inconsistently. Maybe it has something to do with this since the fan might not run as much as it should??

BTW - I always liked the 164's. Has a classic look to it.

      Thanks!

Replace both, the thermostat and the ECT sensor just below the thermostat. Get OEM parts! The typical generic from auto parts stores don't last very long.
