Parlin. NJ dealer? 850

Group:
I recall hearing bad things about Torchlight Motors in Parlin, NJ
The search function showed good experiences, but they were quite old.
Any recent experiences on buying a used 850/S70?
Need advice quick because the '96 850 just died with a blown head gasket.
At 200k miles not worth fixing.

Thanks in advance!

Be extremely careful when dealing with this place. Talking from first hand experience here. I shopped online, then emailed, then took a trip down to check out the car that I was going to purchase only to get down there and it did not exist on the lot. Then I looked at a bunch more that they had and was allowed to take it for a spin, etc. They showed me all sorts of paperwork on the car, claiming that it was clean, serviced, inspected and would pass inspection.
I bit. Got the car home only to find out it would not pass the vechicle inspection. Then tried to get the warranty to cover the work but that did not happen. I ended up sinking $2K into the car to have it pass and be driveable. So be very careful if you deal with them. Personally I don't recommend them to anyone!

This is just my opinion based on my first hand experience with them.

I would avoid them like the plague. They say that they are specialists and very knowledgeable with Volvos. All their cars are advertised as being "just serviced" and in "fine running condition".

There is a catch. They outsource their repair work to some shop that brings the cars up to a level that makes them appear fully functional. If you know the car, almost invaraibly it turns out something major is wrong. There was a story here a year ago of a woman who bought a car, went to have it inspected, and it failed. They found all kinds of codes popped up, and the CEL was burned out. I believe Jeff's first comments were "but you have a warranty." Of course that engine/trans warranty didn't cover any of this stuff. I think he then said "too bad". She later said he was going to work with her, and I don't know the resolution. He may have taken the car back.

How can someone who bills themself as a knowledgeable Volvo specialist sell a car with a burned out CEL and a bunch of error codes? Then say "use the warranty" knowing the warranty won't cover problems like 02 sensors. Not good. You'd think they would, um, check the codes if they were specialists.

I looked at an 850 T5 there a few days ago. Looked great except the climate control lights were blinking. I was up front that I was interested in the car, but the climate control was in trouble and I wasn't interested in a large bill. Jeff said in a snotty tone "And guess what, I'm not fixing it". I said "thanks for wasting my time" and left. A Volvo specialist? Hardly my definition.

I find something particularly evasive about the way this guy operates. He advertises about 30 cars a week on ebay, but hardly any sell (2 per month). I think he gets people like me showing up, lowers the price a bit, and avoids having ebay feedback. If you do a google search I think there is a guy who had $3000 in repairs on a car bought there.

I would just avoid them, but it's up to you. It is one of those highway used car places, with lots of traffic passing by. Good luck.

Two days ago there were 6 or 7 messages about this place. They were all sleaze stories of varying degrees of double talk. Check the archives.

      I do not understand!
I scrolled down to June 2 and saw no applicable message headers.
Did the search function on Torchlight Motors and got the positive results quoted in my original post.

Probably I do not know how to use this list to the most effective results.

          Thanks for the link.
It confirms what I recall hearing.
I notice on the website that they have a lot of cars with low miles.
A review of S70 models on e-bay showed that most had more than 100k, which is not suprising given that the cars are 7 to 10 years old now.
I also saw one with the door panel covering falling off, which was a problem in '98-'99.

          I will avoid that place.

Delaminating door panel covers - most did that 850

That was another Volvo failure in choosing materials or manufacturing process. Every V70 and S70 from 1998-2000 I have seen has the bubbling panels. The guys in the shop in the Volvo dealer near me confirmed the widespread failure. If buying used, there seems to be little choice but to accept the car this way. People have written in with a hundred home remedies such as scraping off the old glue or injecting new glue through a tube, etc., but none of them can ever provide photographic evidence of such a repair and none of the home remedies work. Believe me, I've been through the exercise. Anyway, good luck finding a used car.

The cars with the velour seats have cloth, not vinyl inserts and the door panels don't bubble like the ones on the cars with leather seats.
