How do you remove trim piece to get to antenna booster? S80 2001

Trying to fix the horrible radio reception on my '01 S80. Bought the Volvo-recommended "copper ground strip" at a dealership that goes on the antenna booster to hopefully (?) help the reception. There was a TSB issued for this problem and it has been discussed elsewhere on Brickboard. The parts guy at the Volvo dealership printed the installation instructions for the copper ground strip but they did not show how to remove the interior trim piece to get to the antenna booster.

The antenna booster is located behind the interior trim piece that goes around the small rear window on the driver's side (by the rear headrest). Problem is I can't get the darn thing off!

It appears to be held in by a series of metal (plastic?) clips...not sure if it is also held in place with screws? I was able to pull it part way off but could not get it all the way off. I didn't want to apply too much pressure for fear of breaking the clips and/or damaging the trim piece.

Has anyone done this before? Any pictures? Or a parts diagram? If I could see the back of the trim piece (showing where all the clips are) it would help a lot.

YOUR HELP GREATLY APPRECIATED...THANK YOU!!!

Sorry for the late reply. I don't own the S80 any longer so had to impose on a friend who has one, for illustrations.

    See: http://members.cox.net/n0v8or/S80_AM_reception.pdf

As shown, there are viable alternatives to the "brass strip".

The file is on a UNIX server so the link is case-sensitive, requires the underscore characters, and does not include "WWW". Try to copy it from the previous post and then paste it into your browseer, rather than typing it.

Many many thanks for the great pics!

Actually since I posted my message I was able to figure out how to remove the trim piece but these pictures are still great for future users.

I see you took a different approach with a piece of wire wrapped around the coax connector and then grounded to the body rather than inserting the brass strip from Volvo. If it worked for you that's great. All I know is that since I installed the brass strip the reception has improved tremendously!

I think one of the benefits of the brass strip is that, in addition to helping to ground the coax, it makes a tighter connection where the coax plugs into the antennae booster. This is because you actually insert the brass strip into the connector itself. From what I have read on Brickboard and Volvo-Forums.com it is this connection that gets loose over time and causes the intermittent reception. Wedging the brass strip in there tightens everything up snug.

But again, many thanks for the great info.

We just purchased a 2005 S80 and I've noticed there's no AM reception to speak of. It makes it difficult for me to listen to my ultra-right wing, Obama-bashing, conservative talk shows. I think I'll check into the possiblity this being the problem. So basically what your saying, I think, is that the outer coax shielding needs to be grounded to the chassis? And also verify that it is fitting tight in the socket??

Yes; the outer (shield) part of the coaxial connector works loose over time, apparently from a combination of metal fatigue and vibration, eventually making poor/intermittent contact to the amplifier housing. My dealer applied the "brass strip" repair under warranty and it lasted almost a full year (sarcasm intended). So I tried the "wire wrap" approach, which was as least twice as effective, having worked OK for 2 years before my 4yr lease was up.
