Problems Replacing Antenna Mast 850 1995

I just recently replaced my antenna mast on my 850 and all went well EXCEPT as the antenna retracts it makes a rubbing sound, slows down, and stops about 6 inches short of the bottom.

The new part's plastic gear strip seemed to be considerably longer than the old part that I pulled off the car. I read another post from 4 years ago that suggested pieces of the gear strip can break off and remain in the motor? Anyone think this is the cause and if so can I remove the broken piece? If not - what do you think it could be?

Thanks,
David

If you still have the old one lurking in a corner, check the end of the plastic strip. On a good one, the teeth do not go all of the way down to the end, there is a 1/2 inch section without teeth.

You will have to pull the antenna motor out and disassemble it. Normal tear it apart tools, just be careful - things can get loose and you will have a time figuring out how it is supposed to go.

Also a good time to move the old white grease back to where it should be.

The old antenna definitely did not have any 1/2 inch section without teeth like the new one. The old antenna had a fairly clean break where teeth suddenly stopped - I think you are correct that it broke.

Question: Would you say that it's a bad idea for me to cut the teeth on my new part to shore up the extra length?

          Just thought I'd ask :)

If you have any other suggestions on how to take this thing apart without destroying it I'm all ears. I'll do some further research on it and see if I can get the old plastic teeth outta there.

          Thanks

I took mine apart with a screw driver and a pair of needle nose pliers for the nuts. Quite easy. Take off the antenna mast. Remove the left fender liner in the trunk. Unplug motor, remove the 10mm or 8mm nuts that hold it to the side of the car, remove to work bench.
Remove nuts/screws that hold the round bottom halves together. Remove old plastic bits. Move grease around, put back together.
