V70 struts, how hard to replace upper bearing?

I am not to familiar with replacing front stuts in a V70. When I purchased the car the right front spring seat was replaced because of a constant sqeek noise etc. Now I hear almost the same noise coming from the right front. I can see the coil spring not turning freely, and binding once in a while make a vibration down through the coil spring. Is there an upper bearing that should be replaced and if so, how hard a job is this? The car has 100,000 miles on it, and is a 1999 V70. thanks.

    A must read:

    http://members.shaw.ca/heeeeee/strut/

Removal of the strut requires a new front end alignment. Someone took a pencil and traced the strut on the steering arm(?) so that when he got it all back together it was aligned real close to specs. His alignment shop said it didn't need to be aligned, saved him $100.

The strut bolts need to be replaced. Get them from the dealer, FCP has smaller bolts and the torque is tremendous.

Are you sure the swaybar end links are not worn? They make the same kind of noise.

They are little to no different from most of the other front wheel drive strut assemblies. You will need a good compressor and a big vice to hold it all while you work on it would be nice too.

Remove the strut assembly, compress the spring, remove the spring seat and upper bearing plate, seperate the two, install the new spring seat, reassemble the whole deal and reinstall it in the car. Done.

It's not a bad DIY but make sure you've got good quality spring compressors. Needles to say, that is essential to make this job safe.

I wonder if your new spring seat is going bad? How many miles are on it?

I replaced the spring seat in my 98S70 about 12K ago with the cheaper aftermarket one from Eeuroparts and have had good luck so far.

I can't remember where I found instructions on the Internet for removing a disassembly of the strut unit, but if nobody else has a link for it I will try to find the one that helped me last year.

    Good luck,

    Calvin

The spring seat is about 6 months old. The upper bearing strut holder looks original. ...They should have replaced that while they were at it. By the way the car rides fine, I assume the struts themselves are okay? any way to tell besides leaking, or excessive tire wear? thanks again.

I agree with Klaus to check your end links, but my noise was 100% upper spring seat. I have had an end link fail without a noise, but have heard others say it should make a noise when it fails

Ditto the alignment when you're done.

If the strut is shot you'll not get the proper damping when the spring is compressed or extended.
