oil separator S70 1998

So after reading on this great forum for a while, I see more modern Volvos don't have a PVC valve, but instead have something called an oil separator.I looked in my only occasionally useful Chilton manual, no reference to this at all. Where is this oil separator located? Is it a replaceable item, or do you just remove and clean periodically? what kind of mileage interval? Sympotoms of a malfunctioning one? I use only full synthetic oil, changed at 7k intervals, and run the engine rpms up every now and then, seems that doing so helps to prevent a clogged oil separator, based on my reading here. Kudos again to the many helpful people who answer this newbies queries..

It is located on the side of the engine, below the intake manifold. It is just a plastic box and easier to replace than clean. It takes a DIYer about 5 hours to replace it. I did mine at about 130K, not because it was needed, just piece of mind - previous owner used dino oil for 100K miles.

When it is almost too late, your cam seals will begin to leak and/or the rear main seal will drip oil. The easiest test is to remove the dipstick and check for vacuum there with your finger or a piece of paper.

When the oil separator is replaced, it is a good idea to also replace all of the lines that go to/from it. Especially the line from the manifold to the turbo which has a terrible position on the intake manifold.

Use of synthetic oil will decrease sludge accumulation, but not deteriorated breather lines.
