How to install new oil filter. 850

I want to start changing the oil on my car myself. I changed it on my previous car,(Honda Civic). I always had a problem changing the oil filter. First of all is there a screen that I have to remove on th 850 covering the oil filter? When I install the filter, how many turns should I turn it? It should not be super tight should it? I turned the last one on the civic, and it leaked. I am trying to grow in my knowledge of Volvos so I can become a diy guy. So how many turn to install a filter, and should it be a volvo filter or can I go with a Bosch? Many thanks lads.

Um, a screen? No my '94's filter is just right there in front of you. I'm not sure what kind of screen you might be thinking of.

After removing the old filter, make sure the old filter gasket is not stuck to the engine, and wipe down the mating surface where the gasket will touch. Use either a genuine Volvo or a Mann filter, they may not be as easy to find but are no more expensive than a Bosch, and are a superior filter.

I usually fill the filter with clean oil to reduce the time it takes to build pressure. Lightly oil the rubber gasket, and turn the filter until the gasket contacts the engine. Then turn 1/4 turn more. That's all... You don't need to be a gorilla (This is true with all canister oil filters, btw)

You asked if there is a "screen". There was a splash guard on my 850 that was held on with two 10mm bolts - sat under the back bottom edge of the radiator.

I believe the following will be good for tightness - 2/3 to 3/4 of a turn after the filter contacts the base. Screw it on gently until you feel a sligth resistance. That is the gasket hitting the base where it seals. Now estimate two thirds to 3/4 of a rotation further. No more. Any more will make it hard to remove next time and is overkill.

Follow Klaus' advice - if you get the plug/gasket wrong you will end up with an annoying leak.

There are 2 approved filter brands, OEM and Mann.

You might need a filter wrench to remove the old one if it was put on by a gorilla. Number of turns? No one counts. Just dab the rubber seal with oil and screw the new one by hand until it is nice and snug.
The filter on the 850 is visible under the car, in front of the oil pan. About 1 quart of oil will come out with the filter, so a catch pan is needed.

The nut to drain the oil is also "snugged" up. A new aluminum crush washer is required, make sure the old one comes off with the nut. If you wind up with 2 crush washers, it will leak. Ask me how I know this :)

Use 10W30 oil. Don't drain the engine when the oil is cold, drive the car around a little and let it cool. Engine oil will get up to 200F and scald your fingers easily. If you can grab the drain plug and not burn your fingers but still feel heat, that is just right.

Remember, don't crawl under the car with the trunk tire jack.

And have satisfying fun,

Klaus

Not in a 1995 850, it will leak right through :)

Hmm, I was also wondering about that. I just inherited my Dad's 1995 850, and I called the dealer he used for service and found out the last oil change was probably last November (the car had 162K before the odometer broke). The dealer said they always used 5W-30, but I was wondering if it would be better to go to the 10W-30.

I've always been a 240 man, so this is all new to me! At least I can use the same oil filters that I use for the 240's!

Hurry up and get a new odometer gear, check the back of the owner's manual for viscosity (I like 10W30 for turbo engines, NA??), and check your on board diagnostics for the true mileage.

A-7. 5X, wait, 1X, 1X, 2X = nnn,000 or the 1st 3 numbers of the true mileage.

You mean you can do that? Wow!

So how does it work? Do you count the flashes of the light or something?

Tiy could "search" for that info... There is more to the diagnostic boxes than hoping for a 1-1-1.

Of course you count the flashes, just like retrieving a trouble code. Except 10 = 0.
If you want the 100 place numbers, press 5 times, the 1-1-1. You will get 3 sets of numbers, starting on the left (100) and ending on the right (1s).

Thanks, I'll look into it. This is all new to me - I've only had the car for a few days, and my 240's never had diagnostics. Actually, this is the first time I've owned a car built after 1988!
