Oil on valve cover 850

I have 96 turbo, and the other day I replaced the plugs. I noticed in many of the wells on top of the valve cover, there was dark oil in them (only surrounding the middle three cylinders). No oil on the boots, or on the plugs themselves. Curiously, there was not a drop of oil on the plastic wire cover, which I would think would indicate the oil is slowly dripping from somewhere, as opposed to being forced out under pressure. I am not burning any oil between oil changes.

My buddy has a 95 turbo, and he was curious, so he popped his plastic cover, and lo and behold, he had oil around the middle three cylinders as well, and his plastic cover was also clean. He is burning about 1/2 a liter between oil changes.

Has anyone else run across this?

It most likely requires a $0.90 solution. The plastic o-ring underneath the oil cap at the top of the engine hardens with time and engine temperatures. Thus, oil slowly escapes to the places you mentioned. I was ... scared the first time I saw it in my '95 850 turbo sedan. Now, I keep replacing the plastic o-ring (not the cap) more often and everything is OK.

It is nothing more then spilled oil that seeped in when pouring oil into your engine. Any oil that spills over the filler hole has nowhere to go except where you found it.

I vote for the cap gasket. It can be easy to overlook, even for experienced owners

"I vote for the cap gasket"
If it was the gasket, their would be oil all over the top of the cover.
Ever since taking care when pouring oil into the engine, I have not had any oil collect since. I still have the original gasket BTW on my '94 850 and I'm the original owner.
