Model Clarification Requested V70-XC70

Time to replace the 850 with something a little newer so I come seeking clarity -

For model year 2001 and above ( no XC stuff )

- what is the difference between 2.3, 2.4 and 2.5 engines, some turbo some not, which one is the best to get?

- what are common issues with these cars?

- how much is DIY and how much do you need the dealer for?

We want to get one that has the third seat and child boosters in the rear seats.

As always your help is appreciated!

    Just checking unanswered posts...

The 2.3L engine was the original size for the 5 cyl. The addition of a high pressure turbo to the 2.3L was a great boost in bhp. The 2.4L and 2.5L came later and was avail with low pressure turbo and high pressure turbo as well as NA.
All of the 5 cyl engines are a great design for longevity. The turbo adds power but doesn't detract from maintenance. It just depends on how much fun you want to have.
Fairly easy to work on if you have small hands, a little tighter than the 240 with a 4 banger.

Make sure the wagon you are looking at already has the 3rd seat and booster seats. Retrofitting is almost impossible.

Try to stay away from Volvos between 1999-2002. Those were electronic problem children and dealer only fixes. The newer you can afford, the better.

As always, get an inspection done before you buy. And don't bother the people at Torchlight motors or other "auction" car resellers. Private party is best, if you can find one.

Model Clarification Requested - extra note V70-XC70

Our 1999 V70 (non-turbo, manual transmission) never had any electronic or electrical problems at all. It was the most dependable car we ever owned. So who knows, maybe some are better than others. We bought it new so it had rigorous maintenance. Approx 29-31 mpg on the freeway in 5th gear.

Any manual tranny car from any year is a GOOD car. It is the automatics that cause problems.
1999-2001 had electronic throttle module problems.

70,000 miles - ETM OK so far V70-XC70

I've read about the throttle module problems. My daughter just emailed to say the car reached 70,000 miles, and all is fine so far. We'll see what a winter in Michigan does to it.

70,000 miles - ETM OK so far V70-XC70

I have an 01 V70 T5 with just over 90,000 miles. No problems with anything so far except the ABS with I had Victor rebuild. I notice at start up recently, it miss fires for about a half second, and then runs normally. Anyone wish to comment on this?

Write it up as a new post. Just add more words so we know what you mean by misfire. New plugs, wires? Any codes yet? How old is the ECT sensor? Have you ever cleaned the throttle body? Air filter clean? Blah, blah, blah...
