1998 AWD Driveline Vibration At Low Speed - Center Support Bearing? V70-XC70 1998

Hello Folks,

I've just picked up a 1998 V70 AWD.

When turning tight circles at low speeds, I have a really nasty shake and rumble. At first I thought it was in the back end of the car, but now I feel like it's directly below the center console.

I can also feel it a little when I'm braking, but it's barely detectable.

I'm suspicious of the center driveshaft support bearing and it's holder/bushing. When I am under the car and I 'shake' the drive shaft, it makes a sound identical to what I'm hearing in the cabin.

Question:

Am I likely diagnosing this correctly? Is the center support bearing to blame for the noise and shaking?

The driveshaft support assembly/bearing/holder/bushing seems to be nearly identical to the center support bearing I had in my old '86 760. Is it the same?

Where can I get this thing if it does need to be replaced? I can't seem to find it on IPD/FCPGroton/anywhere....

Does this symptom point to something else acting incorrectly?
- Trans sending too much power to rear?
- Torque converter locking up?
- I've heard rumblings about the viscous coupling going bad - could this be a symptom? Any way to check?

Anything else I should be looking for?

Found it. It is quite lengthy but makes a lot of sense.

If you go to www.v70R.com you will find a lot of this discussion. I have the same problem. Center carrier is supposidly OK, I have doubts also, and the V70 guys point to the viscus coupling.
I don't know if the center bearing can be "replaced" without changing out the shaft. It can be lubed and reinforced. I will look around for "howard Isle of Skye" post, he fixed his center bearing.

Hello all.
Just to say, that the improvements that I gained by lubricating the C.V. joints in the propshaft have been totaly sustained.

I still have a whine that sounds as if it is the center bearing,BUT IT DEFINITLY IS NOT!!!. Repeated checks on the wheels free lift always show it to be the free wheel unit. It has stayed the same for 40.000 mls.---SO I simply live with it.
If you can find my old posting --- well I worked for me....

Best of luck.

Howard.
Isle Of Skye.
