Rear wheel bearing on an AWD - instructions? V70-XC70 1998

Hi,

My new-to-me 1998 V70R AWD seems to need a rear wheel bearing. The brake disk gets really hot after only 2 miles of driving (the other three are cool), there is some rumbling noise, and it does not appear to be brake related.

The online parts outfits seem to sell just the bearing for the AWD (not the hub/bearing assembly, like they do for the front).

I have not found instructions online for this job. I wonder if getting the old bearing out of the hub, and putting the new one in, will require special tools? Basically, I wonder if this is something I should attempt myself or better have a shop do it...

Any hints, advice, would be great.

Cheers.

I wouldn't want to second-guess you but are you sure it's not brake related? My experience with failed bearings is that they won't get hot that quickly. The noise becomes (in cases I've had) objectinable before anything gets warm.

I just had a hot and noisy rear wheel on one of my cars (not an AWD) and thought it was a bearing. It turned out the guide pins on the brake caliper had run dry of grease. There was plenty of noise and heat after about 10 minutes of driving from a cold start.

ksg,

Thanks for sharing your experience. I'll do some extra checking around the brake caliper. The same car just had a sticky caliper on the left front, which was replaced this week ...
