Fuel Pump Replacement 850 1996

Hi All,
It's been a while-all three Volvo's have been troublefree all summer/till today. The 96 855 Turbo that my son has been driving had the fuel pump go bad this afternoon-has 298,000 miles on it and never been replaced. I replaced the fuel filter three times-last time was 55,000 miles ago. i don't hear the fuel pump running when I tried to start it, so I will check the fuel pump relay also. If it's the fuel pump, I don't have any problem with replacing it myself, since I have done EVERYTHING on theis car since day one as you may know from my posts. My question is this-looking at the FCP Groton website, the have the fuel pump insert listed for $221.00 and change and the fuel pump assy listed for $389.00. Can anyone tell my what the difference is and what needs to be done for the insert? My guess is the pump insert has to change over into a plastic cage of some sort and the assy is the whole package. I would appreciate any info from the "Wizards" out there...

Thanks,
LarryU

    Fuel Pump Replacement-Installation Follow-up 850 1996

Just a follow-up to let you all know that I replaced the fuel pump last night-took about an hour and a half. I ended up getting the fuel pump insert kit(Bosch) from FCP Groton. Most of my time was spent getting the rear floor panels off and then reloading the pump into the cartridge-style housing for the fuel pump. I also had a little bit of an issue getting one of the quick-connect fuel lines back on. Once I changed the position of the fuel pump, I was ok, it went back on. While I had access to the spare tire, I topped it off with 60 lbs. It's always a good idea to check your spare when you can, since you want to have a workable spare tire when you need it...

Unless your fuel gauge isn't working, don't bother with the whole assembly. Just get the pump. Hopefully it's just a relay.

When I did the job there was a big price difference between the OEM Bosch unit and a Hella branded replacement. Naturally I went the cheaper route. The box said Hella, but the pump was definitely a Walbro.

The Walbro fit up just OK - not a direct plug and play. This particular Walbro was very noisy. No mistaking when it was pumping fuel. It could even be heard while the engine was sitting at idle. All that aside, after installing that pump (and a new FPR) the starter barely engaged before the engine fired.

    Good luck,
    Will

Just get the FCP rebuild kit or a Walbro rebuild kit. I used to see the Walbro kits on eBay all the time but I can't find them anymore. The FCP rebuild kit is under $100.00 and it has everything you will need. I know nothing about the quality of that particular pump though.

The Walbro kits were around $80.00 and the only bad thing I ever heard about them was that they were a tad noisy. I've only read about one guy that had one fail but I think he ran it out of gas.
