Where can you find good instructions with pictures to show how to do a complete brake job? 850 1996

Hello All,

I have two '96 850 wagons and a '99 XC. I'm tired of paying over $800 for a complete brake job: replacement of front and read pads & rotors, bleeding the brake system. My two 850s are manual transmissions and the XC is an automatic.

Can anyone suggestion a source where I can obtain detailed information along with pictures that will show how to remove brake pads, rotors and bleed the brake system? Thanks to all who reply.

Hugh

There's more out there, but this should work for now.

Careful with you jacking as always and as with most, it's easy after the first time.
    Have fun

Thank you for the wealth of information. I clicked some of the sites, and the information I was looking for was definitely present. I too will put this information in a folder for future use. Thank you again for helping me save a ton of money.

Surprise! The Haynes 850 manual is an excellant source for the XC as well. The only difference is the tool to get the slide pins off and the rear brake pads.
Brakes are about the easiest things to do on a car. Front rotors usually last for 2 sets of brake pads. A tube of silicon brake grease will last for 4 brake jobs or so. Get a pump for doing the brake fluid flush.

You're paying $800 bucks for a brake job? That's criminal...

Heck, even with cross drilled and vented rotors, and ceramic pads I don't think I could get a brake job to $800 even if I replaced every cylinder and used stainless steel lines. Yikes.

Changing your own brakes is something any DIYer can do.

Some people like 'speed bleeders' for doing brakes themselves, these are little one-way replacement bleeders. I don't like 'em.

You shouldn't use the buddy and a pedal approach on a Volvo anyway. Using a pressure bleeder is the way to go.

      You can buy a Motive:

      http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Brakes/Motive-Brake-Bleeder/p-72-150-428/

      Or build your own:

I haven't done the brakes on the Volvo yet.

One last thing. NEVER ever use air tools to torque down your rotors. You'll warp 'em. Use a torque wrench. If you don't have a torque wrench buy a good one. Get it calibrated once a year.

Even if you had to buy every tool you needed, and a Motive bleeder, and good torque wrench, doing your brakes yourself will probably still pay for itself.

As an added bonus you can make sure you're using quality pads and rotors, not NAPA junk.
