bolts for thermostat housing V70-XC70 1998

Hello folks,

Some of you may have read my other post in which I explained how I had a stuck bolt on my thermostat housing.

I had to destroy that bolt in order to get the thermostat out, so now I am tasked with replacing that bolt.

Do I need to get a certain alloy bolt? The thermostat housings (upper and lower) are both made of aluminum, so I think steel bolts would be a bad idea...

is brass okay?

is there a special bolt you're supposed to get for this purpose? If so, is there a substitute I might be able to find without going to the dealer? (perhaps from a specialty fasteners dealer, etc?)

The bolts are steel, check them with a magnet. The hex bolts that fasten the cam cover will fit, they are used on all white block engines.

      Some steels are magnetic, some aren't .... V70-XC70 1998

You forgot to advise him as to whether he should pick a magnetic bolt or a non-magnetic bolt :-).

Actually, this is very important to boaters (living in a corrosion-prone environment). There are cheap steels, claimed to be stainless, that will not work well on a boat -- these are usually 306 -- and will fail after some short time. Then there are those other alloys that are well-suited for a corrosion prone environment, like 316, that isn't magnetic.

Steel, or even stainless steel, by name isn't the answer, especially working around a wet application such as the cooling system.

Anyway, there is always the other complication of electrolysis when you use unlike metals -- that, too, complicates things. Unfortunately, I don't know the exact electronegative value for the particular alloy that Volvo's heads are made from. This would help in picking the right steel alloy, since all these alloys (of Al and Fe) all vary in their value.

      But maybe I'm just nitpicking :-) .

Well, I did find out last night that the thermostat housing bolts are a very uncommon bolt size.

Even to find one with a hex head was a bit messy.

It is a size M7. Most places only seem to carry the even sizes (M2, M4, M5, M6, etc) and M5.

Anyway, I will try to get some from the dealer but it is hard and a pain because I don't have a dealer close by.

I had a similar problem where I thought I had lost the bolt for the front engine cover. It too was a size 7 and found my local Home Depot had them in stock!!!

The best idea is to buy a replacement bolt from the dealer. They are made from aluminum or go to a junk yard. I alwys use antisize coumpound in the treads.
