2001 S40 review S40-V40

As a concerned dad, I'm interested in the reliability and quality of the 2001 S40. My daughter has saved long and hard and wants to follow her dad's advice and go w/a Volvo for her 1st car. She has located a very nice looking and well mantained 01 S40. I've owned 9 from 120's to my current 240, but I'm not familiar with the newer stuff. I've read some negative reviews on the S40's from 2000 to 2004. I don't want her putting her money into something that's NOT going to serve her well. If anyone has experience or knowledge about the 2001 S40, I would appreciate imput. At this point I'm going to discourage her from this purchase.

Thanks,

Steve

I would suggest a Honda Accord. I have owned both, the Accord is much more
    reliable.

    2001 S40 review S40-V40

We get very little talk around here about the S/V40. Maybe that means they don't have problems? Or more likely their owners don't hang around here much. From what I can gather the S/V40 is a bit of an outlier among the FWD "modern" Volvos. It shares a platform with a Mitsubishi and has four lug wheels. The engine is a derivative of the five and six cylinder "whiteblock" engines found in the 850/S/V70 and S80 models. To my eyes, the S/V40 are the least "Volvo" Volvo of the pre-Ford era.

That's not to say that it's not a great car though! I looked into the V40, but abandoned looking for them when I realized that the V70 gave similar fuel economy and cost less, in addition to being bigger on the inside.

    Happy Hunting!

    -Will

    2001 S40 review S40-V40

    Hi,
would like to share our v40-02 2.0LPT experience:
    -regular maintenance with
    -TB at 4 years
    -transmission flush
-o2 sensor renewal due to much short city driving

partly can be explained that it still has less than 100k km, but anyway reliable. good driveability still but mpg is not the best at least in city.

I prefer the S60 over the S40. The little 4 cyl doesn't have enough power and visibility out the rear is poor. The S60 has a proven 5cyl, better trunk space, and more safety features.
Still, the first couple of model years are not the best. The S70 for 01 is much better than the others.

Keep hunting and comparing. My daughter is leaning towards an Altima 2.5SL

Smart move, getting it pre-inspected by a reputible firm. Well worth the cost. I hope you and your daughter are verrrrrry happy.

I dont have experience with 2001,but I bought my daughter a new 2000 almost 9 years ago . The car has now 67K miles and never had a problem with it. On the other hand I bought myself a 2004 , 2 months ago and I.m having problems with Check engine light, something related with cooling Temperature too cold, something like that. I had Thermostat and Temperature Sensor changed and light came back. I think I need a ECM software up grade... It seems like the older models were better...

Hey, I appreciate your time and comments. I've always found the imput from Brickboard to be the most reliable. The mileage on this car is consistant w/your daughters, 67,000. It's obvious that it's been well maintained. The asking price - 7995, may be alittle high, but we can live w/that. One of the reviews indicated it was under powered, which for a new driver could be a plus. You've been very helpful and thanks again.
