Position Light redux V70-XC70 2001

I have had recurring position light messages on the dash for most of the time I have had this car.
I posted about it once and finally found what they were talking about - the uppermost bulb in the lower taillight section.
I took out the socket and replaced the bulb and it was fine for about a week and then I got the light on the dash again.
I checked it and the bulb was fine so I bent the contacts up in the socket and put it back in.
Seemed to be OK for a while but now it comes on whenever the temp gets down in the 20s F.
Goes off when it warms up. Should I bend the spring contacts around the outside edge out a bit to make a
more positive contact?

I can barely get my hand in there, and I don't move quite right for days afterwards...did they factory sharpen the metal around the access opening in your car? They did in mine.

Wow! Haven't seen a post from you in a LOOOOoooong time!
My hands are pretty much average in size so I CAN get one in there, and since it is the LEFT rear I can do it
with my right hand, which is dominant. Nonetheless it isn't really very easy and I'm never sure if I have it in right.
It would be nice to have a smaller head sticking out the side like the critter in "Men in Black" to look in
there and see if it is right (although turning it on also checks that out, I guess.)
The metal around the opening has not been rounded, but neither has it been sharpened, so no serious wounds.
I wonder (ape-like, maybe) if a short piece of broomstick with a slot in the end would make an installation tool.....

I would get an emory cloth or use a dremmel and buff the bulb contacts until they shine. Do both sides of the car. Remember to replace the bulbs on both sides, they are sold in packets of 2 anyway.

The sides of the bulb holder are not as important as the center contact. The little titts on the bulb is where ground contact is made.

All the contacts are clean and shiny. I'm a bit confused as this is strictly temperature-related.
When it gets warmer they come back on by themselves with no intervention.

Darn. Must be those Bangladesh made lamps that can't stand the OK chill. When you get the light again, walk around the car and let me know which light is actually out.

If it is the right rear, check the wire coupling for dampness.

It's always the left rear.
I think maybe it is the thermal shrinkage of the plastic insert/socket assy.
When it warms up it expands and makes contact again...maybe.
I think I will bend the springy contacts out some to exert more pressure on their mates.
I'll let you know if it works.
BTW nothing is damp in there.

On my 01 V70 T5, I had intermittent front left turn bulb failures that was moisture related. It turned out to be a socket problem. Volvo has redesigned the socket. A common problem.

You might call Volvo to see if they've redesigned the socket for the bulb you are having problem with.
