Engine turns over and over before starting S40-V40 2001

My car used to start great. Recently it has begun to take longer to start when the engine is not warmed up (like 5-10 seconds) while it is warming up it misfires and will stall if the engine is not reved a little there is also a fuel smell. The check engine light is on and it gave the codes for misfires. It also gave a code for an O2 sensor. I have since installed new spark plugs and ignition coils and wires. I also replaced the O2 sensor that was brought up by the code. I reset the codes and the car no longer misfires. It still takes 5 or 10 seconds to start, but runs smothly immediately on starting. there is also still a fuel smell.

What do I do now?

Your misfire caused the O2 sensor problem, which would have cleared itself when you installed new plugs.

Take a look at the tail pipe when you start the car. Is there a small black cloud when the engine first fires up? That could be the fuel pressure regulator failing.
If the exhaust always smells of gasoline, then there is a leaky vacuum hose or elbow or something that is allowing unmetered air to enter the intake manifold.

Thanks for the advice. I ordered a fuel pressure regulator and am expecting it any day. Where on the car is this part?

I am not that familiar with the V40 engines. You will have to follow the fuel lines. In the 95 850, it was under the fuel injector rail. On my 1998 V70 it was moved to be next to the fuel filter. I would suspect that on the V40 it is also by the fuel filter.

Found, replaced and it works great. The regulator is connected to the fuel rail. Thanks for the help!!!! :)
