Leaking gas tank . . . 850 1995

I've got a leaking gas tank in my Volvo 850. When I fill it up, it leaks quite a bit, appears to be through the rubber gaskets where the filler goes into the tank but it's a bit hard to be sure having only seen it once now.

Is this a common 850 problem?? What is involved with replacing these gaskets? Seems like it could be straightforward but I'm a bit nervous since it is the gas tank.

My '94 does the same thing, it seemed to be around the fuel pump. I replaced teh gasket there, and it did not fix it, but that's where the fuel seems to puddle. I just fill to about 3/4 tank and no problem. It's not fixed, but until someone can tell us what the problem is, it's what I'm doing...of course, mine has a dud engine, so pumping money into the car isn't in the cards at th moment.

Probably the flexible vent line that goes from the tank up to the top of the filler neck. That will degrade over time, right at the tank enterance. You should be able to feel it with your fingers.

It's not a common problem. My only advice (besides no smoking) is to pull up the carpet in the trunk where you'll find an access panel to the fuel pump. You'll want to disconnect the fuel lines and electrical before you lower the tank. Also, from there you just might be able to see the cause of your woes.

Best of luck,
Will

I have seen many posts on this problem. Mine did the same five years ago and the bill at the dealer was 300.00. If I can find the bill I will post what it said. Dealer labor rates in Michigan are 90.00 per hour.....
