High beams do not stay on - switch broken S80

My wife has a 2001 Volvo S80. The headlights work when you keep your hand on the turn signal (pulling it back). Typically there should be a "click" when you pull on the turn signal lever - then the high beams should stay on. This is not the case in her car. Anyone know how to fix this? Drives my wife nuts which means I hear about it...

Turn the lights from the nine o'clock position to twelve o'clock. At this position, you can control the high beams to stay on or off.

I kinda remember this same thing happening to me recently and I think I changed a fuse to fix or possibly just turned on the headlight switch. Either way a simple fix that will not involve the wire cluser on the steering wheel.

not in Daytime Running Mode, correct? S80

To clarify what Klaus was saying, if the headlight switch is on Daytime Running Mode (at 9 o'clock position probably), you only get the flash-to-pass ... no high beams.

Easy fix! Have you wife turn the headlight switch on.

Seriously, it seems that the "turn signal stalk" (if that is what it is actually called) likely has to be replaced. Is this a tough job to do? Any suggestions as to what is involved in the process?

The hardest part of replacing the stalk is removing the plastic clamshell cover on the steering wheel. 4 Torx screws.

But, if the headlights are switched to the ON position, and you only get high beams when the stalk is pulled, I would think the relay is at fault.

I may be wrong, but I interpret the original message to mean the hi-beams are not staying on, but the lo-beams are OK.
As I recall (don't own the S80 any longer), you push the lever away from you to switch on the hi-beams full time. Pulling the lever activates the "flash-to-pass" feature.
