99 XC vibration V70-XC70 1999

Our well maintained 99 V70XC (98k) had a barely audible squeak (only in forward motion) that sounded like there was something (ice, pebble ??) stuck between the brake caliper and rotor. I removed the left front wheel and cleaned and inspected everything visible, but found nothing. I then had the wife slowly drive the car forward as I listened while standing near the driver’s side of the car. The sound seemed to be coming from, or near the center of the car. The next day she told me the squeak had gone silent. I then drove it and noticed a slight vibration on normal take off that is much more severe when making a slow left or right hand turn. Nothing at normal 40+ mph driving speeds. A bearing ????? Thank you

If it is rear drive shaft related, it is easier to check out on a lift. You want to take a close look at the forward CV coupling just behind the bevel gear case. The cover must not have any cracks.
Then check the center carrier bearing for tightness. Just grab the shaft and try to make it move by shaking it.
Unfortunately, dealers no longer make repairs to these items. They just remove and replace with new. Find a good mechanic and have him make the same inspections, perhaps just adding CV grease will help.

Thanks Klaus. I’ll see what I can find…….Good Volvo mechanics are hard to come by in our neck of the woods, and the nearest dealer is 40 miles away.

I had a low speed vibration in my 1998 for 50K miles, sold it that way (told the new owner of course).

The squeeling noise can be produced by a grain of road sand, usually going in reverse will spit it out most of the time. I wouldn't worry tooooo much about the vibration unless you can really feel it all of the time.

The center bearing is not a fun thing to replace, BTW. Wait until it gets worse. The front shaft coupling is another thing all together. If it is bad, it must be replaced or more CV joint grease added. The front joint is much easier to work on.

As easy to work on as my old 140s and 240s?... Just kidding. But oh how I miss the days, when if necessary, I could do most any project on my old Volvos with a phillips and flat head screw driver and a pair of pliers and an adjustable wrench…. A bit of an exaggeration, but I’m sure you get my drift. My dream car would be my old 140 or 240 set upon a XC skeleton. But of coarse I’d still have the vibration problem….. Thanx again Klaus.

Hello, You just gave me an idea for a customized car. A low tech retrofit. Rip out every fancy electrical thing except the air bags. Leave the PremAir radiator. It would sell like hotcakes. Ha-ha, Kira
