Thermo, ECT, Cooling fan 850 1996

Here are my issues
1. Call from daughter at 2:00 am on way home from Ski trip. Car is hot and we turned it off. BF says he thinks white streaks in the oil.

Here is what I found:
1. Oil ok, coolant full, engine runs fine.
2. CEL on and code is P0118 hi coolant temp.
3. Electic cooling fan is toast, screaming, stalling smoking.
4. CEL comes on everytime after clearing it.
5. Fan tries to run even when it sat overnight.
6. Temp. guage is at normal position even when sat overnight and cold 30 F.
7. Car was hard to start but ran fine afterwards. Suspect the computer is not happy with the overtemp code.

What I need to know:
1. Which sensor is thowing this code. The one at the thermostat or the one at the radiator.
2. Which sensor tells the fan to come on, becuase it is doing it even when it is ice cold.
3. Does there ever come a time with a 2:00 am phone call from your daughter does freak you out?

Thanks to anyone who can help or give me some ideas.

Hawk

Don't you love those phone calls????? You will need a new ECT sensor and probably time for a new OEM thermostat. You WILL need a new fan if it is smoking.
Lets hope the overheating didn't kill anything. The ECT drives both the instrument gauge and the engine fan, via the computer.

Not sure if the 96 is the same as my 94, but the thermostat, and temp sending unit at the thermostat housing are pretty cheap.....about 40 bucks ea. even at the dealer. The bad sending unit is the only thing I know that would cause your needle to stay at normal even after being out in the cold all night.

You also have a relay that sits atop the radiator shroud that turns on and off the radiator electric fan....this could be fried too. But....during the winter, it really only should come if you let the car idle for a long time.

My guess is the thermostat stuck closed. Replace it and the sending unit and try to find the relay and fan on ebay......
