RMS plus breather 850

Well it's time, or getting there, to do the RMS. Before plunking down $ to do so I want to replace the PCV system. FCP has a kit. Has anyone had their mechanic do this entire job: RMS plus breather system, intake manifold gasket, etc.? I've gotten quotes on the RMS but most mechanics seem reluctant to replace the breather box and hoses, seemingly unaware of the connection.

Thanks for your feedback.

Paul

Check on the "shops" in the pull down menu and investigate the ones closest to you. An infrequent board member "tina" lives in the San Jose area, I think. Search her handle and send her an email, tell her I hope she still works on her S70 :)

Two separate jobs. The breather box and lines require the intake manifold to be removed. I believe your 850 is NA, so you don't have the complication of the turbo intercooler. A good mechanic could do it in about 2 hours. A non-volvo mechanic, about 1 day and it would be screwed up.

Just for fun, go to an autoparts store and read up on AutoRx. It is an engine cleaner to be poured into the crankcase. Some people have had seriously good luck in cleaning out sludge. Pour in a can, drive for a week, flush out all of the bad stuff and the leaks go away.

Thanks for the tip, Klaus. Would Autorx have a way to clean out the crud in the breather system? E.g., carbon deposits in the oil trap and hoses? The flame trap was taken out long ago, but the fumes coming out of the dip stick have been getting more noticeable. My RMS leak seemed to increase after I replaced the oil filler cap seal (after it had been seeping).

      Cheers,
      Paul

We have a delema :) Does AutoRx clean out the oil separator box? I don't know, for sure. Some people have sworn by it, others say poo poo.
So long as the breather lines are clear, I would give it a try. For $5 and an additional oil filter, there is a lot of gunk to be trapped, it might just be worth it.
The RMS is super expensive to do, and the crankcase pressure will easily blow it out.
Replacing the the separator box and lines will solve your problem, it will have to be done eventually because the lines deteriorate over time. But perhaps it will save your RMS procedure.

Putting a new seal on the oil cap just made things worse, sorry to say. But at least you don't have oil on the valve cover :)
