    Platinum plugs warning 850

I put in platinum plugs in my 96 850T around 48K miles. Just over 50K miles while going up over a mountain pass, the engine suddenly started to miss like you you had pulled a plug wire. Dealer pulled the head and the two exhaust valves were burned with a chip out of one of them. They had never seen this before but best guess was that the plug insulator broke off. Fortunately, I got Volvo to pay half the cost even though the car was just out of warranty.

I went back to copper plugs (IPD has some they recommend for the 850) and 100K miles later, no problems.

    They don't work.

You might be able to get by with the single electrode version (Smashed on the pavement until you can get it to 0.028 plug gap) but the +II or the +IV versions are death on contact.

The high heat at full boost tends to destroy them after a few thousand miles. Volvo reccomends copper core plugs. I have always used OEM with the best results.
