sudden tranny problem--help! 850 1995

coming to work i got a flashing arrow-check engine light and it seemed like i was in winter mode--couldnt get anything to change by switching gears, selecting econ or restarting--any help would be greatly appreciated tia h

Read the codes in your A1 socket, if it is your PNP switch you should have a 313 code. If you don't know how to read and clear the codes the link below has a post on that.

Like eveyone says, it's the PNP switch acting up. You may want to try running up and down through all the gears with the transmission lever while the car is off with the handbrake up. Run through all the positions a good 10 or 20 times and see if that helps. But eventually, most people end up replacing them.

Note that when we had this problem I could often turn off the

engine and restart and the transmission would no longer be locked

in 3rd gear (limp home mode). Eventually that stopped working and

I had the PNP switch replaced. Just make sure the car is warmed

up a bit before turning it off and back on.

If your location is heading into winter and the days are starting to get cold then......yep, the ol' gear postion sensor, also known as the PNP switch. Volvo can't keep them on the shelves during the winter!
