rear spring clatter 850 1995

i've got ipd rear sport springs with bilstein shocks. been having the "poing" noise every time the rear suspension compresses and rebounds. dealer seem to have isolated it down the top portion of the coils, they seem to flex for some reason and cause the noise. h&r springs notes something called spring clatter with "dead coils." does anyone have any idea what to do? please let me know. thanx

Re: rear spring clatter 850 1995

I have H&R springs on my 855T and I have no noise whatsoever. The "dead coil" referrence, regards some springs, which when installed, and with the car on the ground, has some coils that collapse to the point of having two or more coils touching. The idea is, at enough extension, the gap will open up, and when the suspension recompresses, a noise may be made. The iPd springs for your car do not have dead coils. Therefore, this cannot be your problem.

This "poing" noise you describe is more then likely bad or improperly installed spring mounts/seats. Did you do the install yourself? At the bottom of the spring pan on the rear suspension, you have a spring mount that bolts through the spring pan securing the spring to the bottom of the pan. There is a little tab on the spring mount that alligns with another little hole in the spring pan. Make sure it is in place. Is the spring mount bolted properly? On the top of the spring, there is another mount/seat that comes as part of the bump stop. This one, to my memory, is not bolted on, it simply sits on the spring, and is held in place by the spring up against the sheet metal of the chassis. The only way to check this is to remove the spring.
