Best year for volvo wagons V70-XC70

Dear Volvo enthusiasts,

We are looking to replace our 1989 240DL wagon with >320K miles. We have not followed the reliability trends of Volvo wagons over the past 20 years, but we have had 4 Volvos from the 1980s and earlier and loved them. Can anyone advise us on the most reliable years for the V70 series wagons? We are looking for something about 8-10 years old (translate as <$8K)with relatively low mileage. What should we watch out for in searching for a replacement Volvo wagon? Is it better to buy from a used car dealer or from an individual? All your opinions and experience is appreciated!

Thanks,

Gene

Best year for volvo wagons - nany year with manual transmission! V70-XC70

The newest V70 (type 3?) in USA does not come with manual trans. The previous version, up through 2007, was theoretically sold with manual in USA but they are rare.

Newer is, of course, better. Try to aviod 1999 unless it had the ETM replaced. 2001 was a new model year. and suddenly you are over $8K.

Used car dealers will not have maint history, typically, and you need that. The AC for 1998-2000 was still a problem with evap leaks which are difficult to replace.

It is not the number of miles on the odo, but how the car was treated that makes a difference. Volvos will last only if maintained properly.

Well we have a 1998 S70, the sedan counterpart to the V70 and I would say this is a great year for the V/S70. It does not have the problematic electronic throttle body introduced in 1999, but it has all the good safety stuff (more airbags than the 850 series).

We have been very happy with our S70 which now has 170k miles on it. We did just this week have to remove the ABS module and send in to Victor (thanks to Klaus here on the board for letting me know about him) who will fix the ABS via mail for $125 plus shipping. Other than that, it's been mostly little maintenance things and a couple of very small repairs like a vacuum hose leak ($3 part), a new thermostat in 2006 (did it myself, $50 part) etc.

Did Volvo add side curtain bags in '98? The 850 got side impact airbags in '95, as an option for base and GLT models, standard on Turbo and Platinum.

No, there were no side curtain airbags until the P2 V70.

The '98 SV70 is basically an 850 restyled from the firewall forward. It has side-seat airbags like the 850s.

The 98 has side air bags but not a curtain.. OUr 2001 S40 has the curtain, but as it is smaller it needs it more.

Our 850 was a '94 and sis not have any side airbags, not sure when those were introduced but it was after '94 for sure.
