Akebono EURO-Ceramic brake pads

Hi,

Has anyone used "Akebono EURO-Ceramic Brake Pads" on their Volvo? I have a 850 T-5 with Volvo Pad issues. My mechanic is recommending we try the Akebono EURO-Ceramic Brake Pads. The only negative thing I've read about them is that when they are cold the stopping power is not as good when they are warmed up.

Does anyone have any experience with these pads? Thoughts?

Thank you,

Michael

    Hi,

I went ahead and had the Akebono EURO-Ceramic brake pads installed front and back on my 1997 850 T5.

When they are cold, you definitely have to use more brake pressure to get the car to stop. But, when they warm up they seem fine. They definitely don't have the bite the Volvo pads have. I may need to break them in more.

The day they were installed I did a couple of quick stops from low speeds, and I got a couple of screech type sounds and one clunk sound. The clunk sound might have come from something other than the brake pads. I haven't done any more test like this since. Next I would like to do a brake test from a higher speed to see how they perform.

I'm not sold on them yet. They are definitely quieter than the Volvo pads I had on. (The Volvo pads that were previously installed were the ones that had the grinding sound issue, etc...) And supposedly they have much less brake dust. But I'm not sure quieter and less brake dust is a good exchange for less stopping power of the Volvo pads. I'm not complete sold on these ceramic pads yet, but I will continue to test them out for a while.

    Thank you,

    Michael

You have just become the brake tester. Keep us posted. We want wet rotor performance too. Make sure you get the rotors nice and hot, then let the rotors cool before coming to a complete stop.

There is a web site for bedding pads:

        Hi Klaus,

No problem. I will keep you posted.

I will see about going through a car wash. That typically causes the brakes to perform not as well until they dry out, and you usually get a nice screeching sound. It will be interesting to see how these pads perform.

By the way, I have Brembo Rotors. The rotors were replaced a while back, they are not new. They were replaced on 12/5/08.

Also, I've had the new pads for a little over a week. Sounds like it might be too late to try the bedding process described in the link you provided? If not, any suggestions? Sorry, I'm new to this.

When you say, "Make sure you get the rotors nice and hot, then let the rotors cool before coming to a complete stop", how do you mean? Is this for the wet rotor test? What procudure (step-by-step) should I use?

Thank you for your help, and I will keep you informed.

        Michael

Just find an empty country road and bed in your pads, it is never too late to do it properly. Because of traffic, I sometimes just ride the brakes a little between braking hard (using left foot), just to keep the rotor temperature hot.

By a wet test, I mean on a rainy day in normal traffic conditions. The pads should not make noise, wet or dry.
