My Volvo's OBD-2 connector has the following pins 3, 4, 5, 7, 13, 16 populated. I know that ISO 9141 calls for pins 4, 5, 7, 15, 16. I assume that pin 3 is for Volvo purposes but what about the switch 15 with 13?
Did they move pin 15 (ISO 9141-2 L line) to pin 13 to make life harder for
generic scan tool manufacturers? If a Volvo scanner is used there is no problem reading the codes and doing diagnostics.
Do I need the connection provided by pin 15 (ISO 9141-2 L line) or pin 7
(ISO 9141-2 K line) should be sufficient to read the codes?

Thank you for all your help.
I guess my confusion was caused by pins 13 and 15. My understanding was that if Volvo chose to follow ISO 9141, pin 15 should've been populated, and if this was unnecessary, because communication was provided by pin 7, then ISO 9141 should not specify five pins (4, 5, 7, 15, 16).
But, at least we clarified some of the issues and if the Brickboard decide to archive this thread it will help others.
Thank you again.

I have not checked on my car (1997 855 GLT) but it is probably the same as yours. However, from the wiring diagram for my car (Volvo TP3917201), it is showing:
Pin Connected to Wire color
16 +12V Red
13 cruise control Yellow/Red
7 instrument panel, power seat control module left, power seat control module right, SRS sensor unit, ABS control unit, Electronic immobilizer, AW 50-42 auto transmission control module and the engine control module Motronic. White
5 Ground (A-pillar passenger side) Brown
4 Ground (A-pillar passenger side) Black
3 Engine control module
For the pinout of the OBD-II connector see:
http://www.obdiicsu.com/Docs/LinkConnectors/SAEConnector_files/SAEConnector.asp
www.avt-hq.com/obd_02.pdf
http://home.earthlink.net/~lyttlec/reports/PhaseI.html
Note: Volvo and most European car are using ISO 9141-2 for communication
PIN 1 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 2 - SAE J1850 Line (Bus +) *
PIN 3 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 4 - Chassis Ground
PIN 5 - Signal Ground
PIN 6 - SAE J2284 (CAN High) *
PIN 7 - K Line of ISO 9141-2 & ISO/DIS 4230-4*
PIN 8 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 9 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 10 - SAE J1850 Line (Bus -) *
PIN 11 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 12 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 13 - Manufacturers discretion
PIN 14 - SAE J2284 (CAN Low) *
PIN 15 - L Line of ISO 9141-2 & ISO/DIS 4230-4*
PIN 16 - Unswitched Vehicle Battery Positive
Pin 15 is the L line and it is only used on wake up and initialization. According the schematic for my car, pin 15 is not connected. I used the ISO-9141 version of the software http://www.obd-2.com/ and I am able to read and reset both the Service and Check Engine light. The communication is by pin 7 K-line.

jon, FWIW, I have a generic OBDII scanner I bought from AutoZone it is made by Actron. It reads modt codes and seems to be able clear ALL codes, event the ones it can't read.
Not sure if this is helpful info.

No, I wish I could. This is a generic scanner from AutoZone made by Actron. Maybe there is a mod I can do to the scanner to turn off the Service light, but I don't know of any.

Vladimir,
Could you check what pin numbers you have in your OBD connector in your car? My Volvo has 3, 4, 5, 7, 13, 16.
Thank you.

FYI. I have the OBDII systems from the link below. It is an interface cable&system + software for a serial port on a laptop (or desktop). I've used it on my wifes 99 V70XC and my 99 S80 T6. It provides a lot of info & graphs. It will reset the check engine light. I have not tried to reset a service reminder light with it but I seem to remember one of the Email updates that said the latest version of the sofware was updated to do it on a Volvo. You may want to check it out.

Very interesting post!
I had a visit from the Check Engine Light fairy last week and $410 later I have a new rear oxygen sensor. OUCH! WHen I asked my dealer if this was common, he said, "yeah, and we usually have to replace both of them". We all know this is not true! Right. Next time the CEL comes on, I would love to be able to do it myself.
I would be interested in hearing from any Brickboard member who has been successful in resetting the "Service" indicator light with this setup. I have a 98, so this is an important function that I would like to have before spending the $ (I think it is around $122, right)?
Thanks in advance,

Actually I got it for under $100 as I remember through a car club group buy. It will tell you if the O2 sensor is bad and in fact will plot the output of the sensors vs time for the Engineers among us. I had the inlet air temp sensor go bad (intermitten bad signal and warrenty covered) on my S80 & it told me what was wrong. It will not read the chassis memory where the "gee whizz" features are stored since this is not part of OBDII nor will it erase any "learned" parameters like transmission shift characteristics but it has been very useful for other problems. It will record all the engine parameters into a laptop for a "drive" period then play them back or plot them for closer study. It will reset the "check engine light" and I have not tried it on the service reminder light. My friend used the same model to diagnose a bad O2 sensor on his Pathfinder and to reset the "learned" engine parameters on his Porsche but that computer is simpler than the one on the Volvo.
The full software can be downloaded from the web site with a sample data file that shows you actual engine readings. Good luck.

Jon, I am all thumbs today (damn that flu). On my S70 I have pins exactly like you, namely: 3,4,5,7,13,16. I confused where pin 1 was.
Let's try the picture again.

jon, here's what I got.
In my Actron OBDII scanner I have the following pins present:
2,4,5,7,10,15,16
In my 1998 base S70 I have the following pins present:
2,4,5,6,9,12
I will attempt to insert a picture of both the connectors for your inspection
Good luck.
